EDITOR'S NOTE In September, 1976, a Whitby womnan, Mrs. Doris Junkin, had a ticket on the Wintario draw, which she thouglit entitled her to a $1 0,000 prize, but when she sub- mitted the ticket, she was told by Wintario officiais it had been tampered with. Ontario Riding MP Norm Cafik offered to investigate the matter. The following are the resuits of his investigation, in a letter to Mrs. Junkin, which Mr. Cafik forward- ed to the Free Press: Dear Mrs. Junkin: On December 2, 1976 and subsequent to our meeting of November 27, 1976 in your home, 1 wrote to yoLÎ and indicat- cd that I would do a pre- liminary investigation as to the difficulties you cncountered in collecting the prize mon ey for a Wintario ticket drawn on September 26, 1976. I also indicated that I would enquire to deter- mine if you had, in fact, suffered an injustice in this matter. During the course of oLir meeting, you mndi- cated to mne that you had, what you believcd to be, the winning ticket and that when yOL1 presented it to the Wintario people in Toronto vQu hiad al- ready signed your iiame and address on the ticket. You were then informed that the ticket numbers had been altered and told that you could not collect the prize money. This ticket was then inadvertently lost and neyer found. After exchanging corres- pondence with the Wintario officiais, 1 asked My assistant Pierre Guimond and your nephew, Mr. Ron Sproule, to go down to the Wintario office and se the winning ticket for themselves. The examina- tion of the actual winning ticket revealed that this ticket bore the signature and address of a resident of Barrie, Ontario. The used by vendors of Wintario tickets was that of a merchant in Barrie, Ontario. There was no signs to indicate that the signature or the address had been altered in any- way and since you bought your ticket in Whitby, it would be reasonable to say that the ticket presented by the person from Barrie was the genuine winning ticket of the $ 10,000 prize. In lighit of the above, 1 feel that there is flot sufficient evidence to maintain that you have suffered an injustice or suifficient evidence to cal on the O.P.P. to continue the investigation. 1 regret that this incident has caused yoLI rnuch anxiety and hope that you wilI not hesitate to contact me in the future should you require assistance on this or indeed any other matter. With best personal good wishes, I arn Yours sincerely, Thanks from Dear Sir: On behaif of the Whitby Warriors Senior "A" Hockey Club, may 1 extend our most sincere appreciation for your contribution to the success of our recent "Ladies Night" at the Ontario Riding Warriors Iroquois Park Mrena.
