About 300 teachers fromn Whitby and Brooklin schools heard in address hy Dr. Tom Lickona, a professor of le vlopinental psychology tromn New York State. Dr. Liekona spoke on the subject of values developmient in chljdren, sta ting "we mnust design opportunities to bc mioral" for chldren. The six goals of moral education, according to Dr. Lickona, are: to develop in children a sense of fairness. a sense of comimunity, a caring for others, better comnmunica- tion skills, co-operation, and the ability to carry moral thinking in to action. The teachier's responsibility is to provide the opportunity and leadershiip to stimrulate deeper normal thought amnong children, said Dr. Lickona. Children who experience such a program should have an improved self-concept and tolerance for others, he said. Teachers being introduced to the methods of "values education" entered into a niock discussion about e thnical issues faced in the classroom such as what to do about students cheating on tests, and bullying of younger st udents - The professional activity day was arranged by the Durham Board of Education and Dr. Lickona's visit was sponsored by the board's values education committee. YMCA offers guitar classes The Durham YMCA is presenting a new course on Beginners and Advanced Beginners Group Guitar Instruction starting Monday, Feb. 7th at Henry Street High School, roomn 103. A new instructor, Mary Roney, will be on hand to teach how to tune the guitar, the chords, and all the special know how that is required for personal enjoy- ment of the guitar.
