PAGE 12, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9,1977, WHITBY FREE PRESS Plenty of action in hockey Round Robin Play-offs The Brooklin-Whitby Minor Hockey Association Round Robin Play-offs continued throughout the past week, with plenty of action in all divisions. JUVENILE At Ajax on Jan. 30, Ajax nipped the CBC Juvenile team 7-5, making the first loss for the CBCs in their first game of the Round Robin. Goals, scored for the CBCs were by Garry Bruce (2), Rich Byford, Blair Gibson and Brian Ward. In a real see-saw battle th- CBCs edged Bay Ridges 5-4 at Iroquois Park Arena Jan. 31. Goals were scored by John Jordan (2), Dan Gallowgley and Dean Seymour. Bay Ridges scored first after only 1:16 of the first period and then scored a second goal to make it 2-0. At the end of the first period it was 2-1. At the end of the second period it was 3-3, and after only 58 seconds of the third, Bay Ridges scored again. The CBCs tied the game at 5:49 of the third period and got the winner at 10:42. The CBès now advance to the next series against Bay Ridges or Ajax. MINOR BANTAM The .1Brooklin-Whitby Optimists won two games in the Minor Bantam Division on Jan. 29 and 31. On Jan. 29 at Iroquois Park they defeated Ajax 4-1, with goals by John Fusco, Warren Subject, Bob Middle- ton and Greg Platt. The score was 2-0 at the end of the first period, and Ajax scored its only goal at 53 seconds of the second. Three tournaments won by Florists The Whitby Mall Florists Major Atom A.A. team won its third tournament in the past month, Saturday, by winning the Newmarket A.A. Major Atom tournament in three straight games. In the first game, Whitby defeated Newmarket 10-3; in the second Whitby won over Aurora 5-2; and in the third game Whitby trounced Port Colborne 10-2. Last weekend Whitby won the Peterborough Liftlock A.A. Major Atom iournament winning five straight games in two days. The first game was Whitby 3, Ajax 2; second game, Whitby 5, Trenton 0; third game, Whitby 6, Lindsay 0; and fourth gane Whitby 4, Brockville 3. In the championship game it was 8-3 for Whitby over Thornhill. On Dec. 26 and 27 the Whitby Mal] Florists won the Ajax Major AternTournanent in tour straight ganes. In the first game, it was 12-0 for Whitby over the Oshawa Bruins; in the second game, 6-0 for Whitby over Ottawa; in the third game, 5-3 for Whitby over Uxbridge; and in the final game 3-2 for Whitby over Ajax. The Whitby Mall Florists have won 33 straight tourna- ment games without a defeat since the team was formed as Novices. Ron Cameron's curling rink wins Mr. & Mrs. Bonspiel The first Whitby Mr. & Mrs. ( Bonspiel, held at the Whitby v Curling Club on Jan. 29 and f 30, was a trermendous success. Twenty-four rinks, twelve i of them from the Whitby t Exhibition f games 1 C Brooklin Whitby Minor I Hockey teams lost two and won one in recent exhibition t games with teams from neighbouring communities. The LASCO Steelers Pee Wee team lost 3-2 to Aurora Jan. 30 in Aurora, with goals being scored by Ken Keenan and Kelly Dzikewich. This was a warm-up for the Steelers in preparation i for their trip to the Quebec t Pee Wee Hockey Tournament. The first game at Quebec will be against Ancienne Lorette I at noon on Feb. 13. In a Major Bantam exhibition game at Iroquois Park Jan. 31, Bramalea defeated Whitby Toyota 3-1, Peter Pipher getting the lone Whitby goal. Bramalea scored in each of the three periods and led 3-0 until the 12:07 mark of the third period when Whitby got one goal. In Novice play at the Brooklin Arena, Jan. 30, the Brooklin-Whitby OPSEU Warriors defeated Port Perry 3-1, with two goals by Billy O'Meara and one by Sandy Connelly. The Optimists have won all four of their Round Robin games and will advance to the next Round against either Bay Ridges or Aiax. MINOR PEE WEE On Feb. 1 at the Brooklin Arena, Aqualine Pools defeat- ed Bay Ridges 4-3 in a close game. Whitby goals were scored by Jeff Hanley, John Byberg, Richard Daley and Andre Cadieux. In this game it was 1-0 for Whitby at the end of the first period, 2-1 at the end of the second, and .tied after 6:35 of the third. Two Whitby goals in 15 seconds, (8:02 and 8:17) ensured victory for the home team. Aqualine Pools have won all four of their Round Robin games and will advance to the next round with either Bay Ridges or Ajax. MAJOR MIDGET In Major Midget play, Ferrco . Engineering defeated Ajax 6-4 at Iroquois Park Jan. 29, with three goals by Dale Sawyer, and one each by James Roach, Ken DeMille and Peter Foran. Whitby scored-two goals in 30 seconds at 4:25 and 4:55 of the first and never looked back. It was 2-1 at the end of the first and 4-2 at the end of the second period. ROUND-UP At this stage of the Round Robin, out of the seven divisions, Minor Pee Wee to Juvenile, the Minor Bantam and Minor Pee Wee tearns of Brooklin-Whitby have eight points each and the Juvenile and Major Midget teams have six points each and will certainly play in the next round. The Major Bantam team has four points and this may be good enough to advance them.
