WHITBY FREE PRESS% WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26, 1977, PAGE,3 Bill Irwin returns to law On Jan. 1, Bihll rwin, who practised law in Whtby for several years b efore working for Red Wing Orchards, returned to law practice in this town. He has gone into partner- ship with one of Whitby's longest-serving lawyers, Hugh Nicol, under the name' of Nicol and Irwin. Mr. Irwin, a member of the town counicil in 1973, was involved in municipal work in his former practice, and will be .again devoting his time mainly to municipal law. He was called to the Bar in 1967, and practised law in Whitby fro m then until October 1974 when he and his sister Marion O'Donnell became involved in the management of their fam~ily farm, Red Wing Orchards, and its roadside fruit and vegetable stand. While in the law practice, Mr. Irwin was a partner with Bill Hobson from 1968 to 1971, and fromi 1971 to 1974 with Coath, Irwin, Livingstone and Johnston. On Dec. 23, 1976 the Irwins decided to stop operat- ing the roadside mnarket at Red Wing Orchards, su thiey could devote miore timie to development of the orchard- Season ai decline in On the closing of the road- side market Mr. Irwin said: "It became very clear as we «lent along, that very few people, if any were operating both a roadside market with the scope, of ours and an apple orchard the size of ours. "One or the other was being operated and usually by a small involved family group which helped keep labor costs in line. While we have been working on our market, we have been unable to spend much tiine developing new ideas on how ta modernize or strearnline aur orchard operations", said Mr. Irwin. It would seem that it's just too rnuchi, then, to manage both market and orchard. And so, in an attempt to cut down our costs and t'O have tirne enough to re-think aur orchard program, we have decided to close our roadside market".'- Starting this rnonth, Red Wing Orchards wîll be retailing its apples at its cold storage building on the north side of F-lighway 2. Other changes inçluide reducing the size of the orchard by cutting down 1 ,000 trees, and introdticing a "pick-youir-own", prograrn, probably in the fall of 1977.
