Fortunately that hasn't happened but there have been other problems to contend with over the years. Upon hitting the mattress you miglit just set up a shock wave that would flot only fling youback off the bed like a piece of cork on a wave but you alIso might wind up with a one-ton mattress on top of you. 1 stili remember the time 1 was helping a friend put in a water bed without a framework and the mattress shifted and pinned her against'the wall and me to the floor. How would you like to call the paramedics for that one? Another thing about water beds 1 don't care for is that you can't make them up. It seems that you just get one side of the bed made and tucked in and the water shifts and out cornes the other side. I've finally resigned myself to having a messy bed flot to mention having a very sînal selection of sheets. Blankets and sheets to fit a queen sized water bed are worth a king's ransomn and king's ransoms are flot within my budget. Pets and water beds don't mix very well either. It's gôt nothing to do with sharp claws but father how fidgetty the pet is while reposing on the bed. Often I get those wild dreams in the middle of the night about the ship being caught in a fierce storm at sea and being swamped with great waves and me being washed overboard. 1 invariably wake up to discover my cat has cornered a flea and is scratching madly to get the critter out. Alil of this wild scratching and biting sets the bed in motion and results in the cat getting the bool when 1 finally wake up and discover l'in flot really going down at sea. Of' course snacking in bed is almiost compîetely out. Anything that can roll off a plate niost certainly will on a water bed and if it's a cLIp of coffee often the only course of action is to quickly abandon ship before the hot java runs to the deepest depression in the mnattress, namely where your backside is located. Because therc's so mtLich water 1I had to instali an electric heater in miy bcd to kcep the watcr warmi and even though the heater's CSA approved 1 stili get to the odd twinge about electrocuItîon in mny sleep. Anyway wvith ail the adjustinents l've had tou make (l doni't have to take Gravol anymnore before 1 repose) and now that V ve guti my sea legs, even if 1 use them 10o sleep, I might be Alie to suirvive on -one of those la ke rs. But I WvOId iss the clatter of typewriters, my editor yelling, "ig. hihuiitg! ' and hiaving diet pepsi spilled un me by our star reporter Brian Wintcr. Such is life.
