Ajax town line, following a nieeting held in Ottawa Thursday. The construction of the underpass is the only thing preventing the opening of the town line (Regional Road 23) as a major arterial route from Highway 2 to Highways 12 and 48 at Beaverton. Mr. Cafik said the situation "Ionks- encotiraing" after a two-and..a-hafr hour meeting in his office with representa- tives of. the CTC, Durham Region anid the ministry of transport. Mr. Cafik has asked that the region have the right to seek- funding, under the -federal government's special grants programn and the grade crossing fund which covers up to 80 per cent of the cost. In January 1973 the former County of Ontario applied under the grade crossing program and was turned down. The transport depart- ment says it has no funds available and does not rate the project as a highi priority says Mr, Cafik. Mr. Cafik would like to see the project proceed before any public hearing, if a public hearing is required under law to straighten out the financing between the region and the CPR. He said he expected a public hearing would be inevitable. Mr. Cafik said he expected the grade separation to cost one millipn dollars, and would have a considerable benefit for people travelling to cottages in the Lake Simncoe and Kawartha lakes areas. Further' meetings with Transport Minister. Otto Lang and Durham Region officials are expected within the n ext few weeks. The loainof the proposed underpass is about a haif mile south of Taunton Road in Whitby.
