PICKERING Ontario Health Minister Frank Miller announced last week grants totalling $27 ,650 for two Durham Community Mental Health programns. The pro-rams will be sup- ported for thenext two fiscal years with annual budgets totalling $62,400. "Community Involvement and Volunteer Projet",l operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association ini Durham, through, the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, is award- ed $21,250, in the current fiscal year, with an annual budget of $40,300 for the next two years. Serving the Durham area, the project will offer volunteer services to provide after-care for former hospital patients on a une-to-une basis. The program will furtherassist people Linder severeemotional stress to cope in their home surruundings and avoid the necessity of hospital care. Self-help, unsupervised home and social rehabilita tion prograins operated by the Canadian Mental flIeal th Association in Durham are awvarded S6,400 in the current fiscal year with an annual budget of S22,100 for the next two years. The Self-lielp segment of this prograin includes estab- lishment of une or more mental patien t associations, "Recovery Incorporated". and "Friends and Relatives" groups for the Durham Region. The second comiponient or tins pervised home wîll provide con tinuing care and adlecuaie housing for six to eighit persons particularly former patients without larnilies. The social rehabilitation programr will offer group activities to assist pe i sons with identifiable psychiatric problemis to attain social confidence and ernploymnent opportunit ies. Ongoing evaluations of all comrnunity mental health prograins will assist future decisions for continued fund- inig bey'ond the initial two-year period. "New approaches to the treatm-ent of the psychiatri- cally ilI". -said Mr. MillIr. -have resulted in a major increase in the number of former mental patients being treated in the community, rather than in institutions. "In the past 10 years there lias been a reduction of over 8,000 patients in hospital psychiatric beds. Recently we have closed two out of 15 provincialipsychiatric ho spitals.
