PAGE 12, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1976, WHITBY FREE PRESS North Ward candidates stress care in planning Candidates contesting the• North Ward council seat were asked two questions. Follow- ing are the questions and the candidates' responses, limited to approximately 75 words for the first and 150 for the second. WHAT QUALIFICA- TIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE POSITION YOU ARE SEEKING? Bob Carson: I have just completed a year of valuable experience in the administra- tion of tôwn business as North Ward Councillor and have gained the co-operation of the many departments. I have had experience involved in vities such of Brooklin President Kinsmen, years of business and have been community acti- as Vice-President Spring Fair, Vice- of . Brooklin Warden of St. Thomas Church, Member of I.O.O.F. and have served on Dr. Ruddy Hospital Board and CLOCA. I am available to the voters during the day as well as evening. Jack Woodward: The duties of a councillor require a very mature person who has had a great amount and variety of business administra- tion experience along with a burning desire to serve full time regardless of the amount of compensation. I have had many years experience and extensive responsibilities in the business world. The desire to serve my community is on record via receipt of serveral high awards bestowed upon me during my 15 years in Whitby. WHAT ISSUES HAVE THE GREATEST IMPACT ON THE RESIDENTS IN YOUR WARD, AND WHAT WILL YOU, IF ELECTED COUNCILLOR FOR THAT WARD, DO ABOUT THESE ISSUES? Bob Carson: The Secondary Study of Brooklin is a concern to us all. I intend to see that the planners hold nonthly meetings with the residents. I an setting up a citizens' committee that will ineet on a weekly or bi-weekly basis with the planners. This wil ensure the kind of growth the residents would like to see. I will insist that the present downtown will be- come the major shopping centre of the growth area. Senior Citizens' apart- ments are still a prime concern and we are making in-roads. I do not feel it's right our senior citizens should have to leave the community when maintaining a house becomes a burden. Youth Centre is a must; our teenagers need a place to meet and be together. I think this should be organized by local people with the encour- agement of the town. • Getting our share of the tax dollars and lot levies spent in our area. The Budget process is a very important part of a councillor's job. Jack Woodward: ,I think that evervone agrees that one of the most important issues at this time is the degree of growth in our area during the next few years. There is no doubt that some areas of the North Ward will grow - all Canada is growing - but I do not agree with tremendous growth just for quantities sake. Any growth must qualify as quality growth. I will carefully study and scrutinize all subdivision and/ or growth proposals and support only those whose development meets with the general approval of the exist- ing neighbours.. I also feel that both our young people and seniors have been short changed in regard to recreational facilities pro- vided in the North Ward by the town council. We do have some facilities but I will devote the time necessary to provide real leadership to the activities of all our young and senior people.
