Free Press Photo St. Mark's - Church dedicates memorial windows. The 1 Sth anniversary cele- brations at St. Mark's United Church wound up Sunday with the dedication to two memorial windows honoring the founding congregations of the church. The windows, designed by a Toronto stained glass firrn. were installed on either side of a large window in the north wall of the church. The west window, depiet- ing St. Matthew and the Good Shepherd is dedicated in tri- bute to the Almonds Church congregation, 1837 to 197 1. Jack Newton, a representative of the former Almonds con- gregation, unveiled this window. The Almonds congregat ion joined St. Mark's when the old church was closed in 1971. One couple who visited St. Mark's Sunday were the first people to be married in Almonds Church, in 1928. The east window, which depicts St. Mark and Christ at the door, commemorates the 1 St anniversary of St. Mark's congregation, 1826 to 1976. This window was un- veiled by.Mrs. W. D. Winters, President of the United Church Women of St. Mark's. The St. Mark's cangrega- jtion was founded in 1826 by the formation of the Whitby circuit of the Methodist Church of Canada. Rev. John Smith, minister of St. Mark's for the past 22 years, conducted the dedica- tion service and spoke on the meaning of the windows. He said it was important for the members of the congregation to rememnber those who came before them, both ordained and Iay people, who buit the congregation of these two churches. He also pointed out that it is useful to spend money on somnething that can touch the aesthetic values of the î people of the congregation at such a time of cammemora- tion. During the dedication cere- mony, the congregation sang the St. Mark's anniversary hymn, with words by Bea MacKay and music by Dr. R. C. Davis, principal of the, Ontario Ladies' College. The titie of the hymn is: 4"Eternal Father Lead Us>Stili".
