Free Press Photo Leaves Oct. 3 Boat cruise to Nassau- from, Whitby harbor, a vacationer's dream A two-month sailing cruise to the Caribbean is many a vacationer's dream, but few ever get the chance to realize that dream. Two Whitby residents, however, are looking for six people to go with themn on a cruise from Whitby to Nassau thîs faîl, leaving Whitby *harbor October 3, and arriving at Nassau on December 3. The cruise will be made ini a 46-foot, two masted trimar-- an, built in a barn on' Taunton Road and launched GAIL DORFMAN SOHOOL 0F BALLET is now open for registration for 1976-77 classes. A teacher at the National Ballet School of Canada for f ive years, Gail Dorfman wi Il be offering Cecchetti Syllabus examination classes as well as regular ballet classes for children from six years and for adults. Owners of the Isla are Gary Hodgkins and Diane Taylor, who spent five years building the boat from a set of plans, and'spent'the past two years sailing around the Bahamas and Haiti. Charter cruises enable Gary and Diane to pay for the construction and upkeep of the Isia. -The cost for the Whitby to Nassau trip is $1,000 per person, covering board and food. Gary and Diane describe the cruise as "an ideal thing for someone who thinks he wants to get into boating but is not sure" Members of the crew can take part in sailing the Isia, cooking in the galley, and varlous recreational pursuits such as spear fishing, diving and beach curnbing. The lsla will make its way to the Atlantic Ocean by the Oswego Canal and the Hudson River, and follow the American coastline to the Bahamas. Stops wiIl be made in various ports along the way. Since June the lsla has been rnoored at Whitby harbor, taking local residents on charter tours to Toronto, Kingstoni and other points on Lake Ontario. The IsIa is made of wood covered with fibreglass, and has five double sleeping cabins with a capaèit' for 10 people. Gary and Diane have had a number of adventures with their boat since they started sailing. They originally intended to christen the Isia with a bottie of champagne, but ful or empty, the bottle would flot break. AIl they succeeded in doing was send- ing the bottle to the bottom of Whitby harbor three times, and knocking an ornament off the bow of the boat. One time when they were sailing from Miami to New York, in a gale 100Ù miles off shore, a very tired budgie flopped aboard. Gary and Diane gave the bird some sesame seeds, and it took off for land after two hours rest. One permanent resident of the Isia is Pokey, a five- year-old dog, which Diane says is part wolf, part huskie, and part Labrador Retriever. Hiowever, she points out that Pokey is gentie as a lamb and ikes everybody.
