Approximately 23,000 miners died in Welsh pits between 1890 and the out- break of the First World War. Some of the story of what it was like ta be part of the coal industry at that time is illustrated in this exhibition. On Sunday, Septemnber 12, there will be 'a special recep- tion at the Gallery, from 2 ta 5 p.m. AI this reception, Ivor Davies, an area resident, will be guest speaker at '2:30 p.m. Mr. Davies worked in 'the coal pits in Wales during the early part of this century and will reminisce about his personal experiences in the Welsh mines. Everyone is welcome ta attend. The ýtation Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday fram 2 ta 5 p.m. and Wednes- day and Thursday evenings from 7 ta 9 p.m. Coalface 1900 wiIl be on display from Septernber 4 ta September 26. The exhibition was pro- duced by the Welsh Arts Cauncil and circulated by the Univeristy af Guelph Library Gallery. United Way' begins Mondciy The Oshawa-Whitby dnited Way caînpaigfl for i1976 begins Monday, as canvassers go out through the twa com- niunities ta raise funds for 217 comniunity agencies. This year's objective is S795,000, and increase of S41 ,000 aveu iast year. A nuniber of Whitby residents are activeiy partici- pating in the carnpaign, either as directors or as camipaign chairmen. Directors from Whi tby are Bill Nurse, Alta Mae Eberlee, Ed Robson, and Mrs. Guy Stevenson, a resident of of Brookiin. bIrs. Eberiee, in addition ta being a director, is in charge of the residentiai mail campaign for bath Oshawa and Whitby. Don Rait, a Whitby rosident, is in charge of the Generai Motors ernployee campaign for both com- niunities; Pat Johnson is in charge of the canvass for the legal profession in bath com- miunities; and Clay ton MacKay is in charge of smai i professions for both cammunities.
