The- Canadian National Exhibitioni in Toronto has once again survived its annual onslughit of people, including îiîyself. Year after year, the CNE goos on despite murnb- liigs and grumblings from us-the paying cuistomiers. Only twice 1 nianaged to see this year's CNE, mainly because 1 had a free pass-a nice thing to have in these days of inflation and sky-rocketing prices. The CNE mianagemnent even allowed me to take mny car into the exhibition grounds. Firstly, 1I must mention the lavislh party for the niemibers of the press, arranged (as usuial) by Jimmny Conklin, the King of CNE's Midway rides., The party star ted early enough, thus allowing nie to stay longer-well, quite a bit longer. Needless to say, 1 was attracted by Jiirny's delicious food (ahl you could eat) and by the pretty hostesses. Also, drinks wvere flowing freely, but 1 decided tostay away froni that liard stuff. This huge party broughit rany old-tirners togetiier- newsnien who have worked for somne of the best news- papers ini Canada. Met quite .a few ex-Tely staffers and Star writers and photographers. We started talking shiop. But, 1 could flot help to think that practically everyone wanted to say: "Hock, tiiose wero the days! Newspapers nowvadays sure have lost soine punch. I t's kid stuff ail the wvay ". While 1 xvas chatting away, a pretty hostoss handed ni~e a niagazine 1 have nover seen before. It wvas the August issue of Conklin Showvs Emiployee Newsletter called "Jack Pot". 1 arn glad 1 took the nows'otter as later on 1 found a wealth of informiation about CNE's Midway rides. Also sorne siippets of informiation about Jinimy Conklfin and his present-day plilosophy abou t goverumiiets rolo in the frce showvbusiness eniterprise. The article "Governinient Carbie" clearly indicated that Jiumy ivis uinhaoo)v about Governincnt ta ke s and nuierouis DAVID--SON, SMITH AND CRAVEN CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS 110 GREEN STREET WHITBY, ONTARIO L'IN 4C8 TELEPHONE (416) 668-7788 DOUGLAS A. Jimmy observes that any GovernmeÉ.nt intervention in free enter- prise cari do moreharm than good. Right on, Jinmy! And speaking of CNE, 1 must mention Big Bill (Bill Moore) whio was found to be too good for the Pink Poodier on CNE's Midway. You see, Bill is very good at tossing quarters on an ernpty plate. In fact, so good that ho wins every tiiîe. Thus, hie was barred from Pink Poodiers., but lie nianaged to win, nevertheless, close to 50 stuiffed animiaIs. He has a houseful of tlîem. Some of his winnings are simply given away-to kids who ride on his TTC bus. Two of mny old-time newspapor colleagues, Jim Bard and Ted Stuebing, both ex-Telegrain reporters, are about to publish a weekly nowspaper called "Maple Leaf". The paper will be circulated in North York. 1 am glad that suicli a miove lias been nmade by two, higlîly.qualified newsnîen, who, until recei",, did a tremndous job of covering local news for CFTO-TV.
