AGE 10, WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 1976, WHITBY FREE PRESS Tournament this weekend Puckrins look ready for Cinderella World Series The Whitby Novice girls tuned up for the upcom: ing Cinderella-World Series of Softball Tournament in Corning, New York, with three impressive wins last week. The Puckrins, who will leave for Corning at a.m. Friday, about 14 hours after their opening playoff game ends, won two exhibition games and one regular season game. In exhibition play, Whitby trounced Oshawa Fernhill Bantams 28-17 and smashed Bowman and Gibson Midgets 12-3. In Lakeshore League action, the Puckrins edged Ajax 6-4. Whitby defeated Oshawa despite committing 12 errors. Susan Bissell led the offence by belting four hits, scoring six runs and driving in seven runs. Pitcher Marion Verkuyl struck out eight batters, allowed eight hits and walked eight batters. In the contest against Bowman and Gibson, the Puckrins played errorless ball. Darlene Gallas and Laurie Kirkton led the Whitby offence with three hits apiece. Debbie leaslip, Çathy Allin and Susan Fraser shared the pitching duties for the winners. In the narrow victory over Ajax, Puckrins' hurler Marion Verkuyl fanned 18 batters, walked two and gave up four hits. Debbie Reinhardt was Whitby's top hitter with two.
