A great deal of public outcry and a change of heart by the police commission caused regional council to reconsider the matter on May 1 2. Again it voted in favour of closing the station, tliis time by a narrow 16-14 margin. Stili more public outcry forced another reconsiderat ion of the issue last Wednesday. This time, howeVer, council voted 16-9 in favour of keeping the station open. It was obvlous that the many hours of lobbying by various grôups and individunals within the town had had an overwhelming« effeçt on the represen- tatives of tl* othrnuriiepaliisi hergos overwhelmitt8, io feet, that niay councillors did a lot of soul searchlng on the maltter. Su, a tiptoW Ihe Free- Pressa hat goes out to the many Wby ipsident's Who expressed their concern about the closing of the Whitby Police Station. Thanks especially to (in no particular order): Harold Rowley; Bill Pilldngton; Mary McEachern; Russ Wilde-, John Milis; Cathy Jubenville; Gord Hannia; the Whitby Chamber of Commerce; Mayor iim Gartshore and Whitby Council. And we would certainly be remiss if we over- looked the obvious concern of two Oghawa Regional -Councillors, Alan Dewar and Allan Pilkey, and. Pickering Regional Councillor Jack Anderson who ail cared enos,-gh to reconsider the- matter and swing their votes in our favour, ensuring our success in keeping the station open. Let's hope that this decision marks the begin- ning of an era of co-operation and brings an end to, the era of confrontation among the municipalities of the region. __________ Regional government of ten cornes under crilisrn for being too big and bureaucratic and, therefore, impersonal and uncaring. Regional council is oflen attacked as being a battleground where representatives of each rnunicipaity continually fight it out for the best for their community and don't give a damn about the others. More often than not, the cri ticismn is justif ied. However, the regioWi decision to keep open thie 18-division police station iii Witby may be a big slep mn bnproving the pçp's image of regional government - at least the ifttýge held by the people of Whitby. On March 24, when regiongl council considered a recommendalion by the- huard of police commissioners to shut the."station, it voted 18-4 in favour of closing the faciity. Police did job,, at Sunday parade A number of upset parents very rightly expressed the ir concern Suilday afternoon about the Mo toris ts Who seemed 10 have lutIle respect for the annual church parade for the childlren ini the Whitby District Scouting movernent who were parading down Brock Street to Centennial Park. Coming down the first block to the four corners was alright, but on the south side the kids had to face oncoming traffic and when they fiaced left and made their salute to the Mayor stationed at the lire hall, mnost of the kids couldîVt sec anlything but bumpers and door handies. Some parents even valiantly tried to re-route the North bound traffic south of the fire hall, but. after being disregarded totally and verbally abused by mnotorists, eventually gave up. We'd like to think that the mnotorists referred to ARE NOT 'Nhitby residents but were merely jassing throughi...because those sort of people we don't need in Whitby. In any case the Free Prcess have investigated all correspondence relating tb the parade between the parties ÎflvolvC(l-and Durhamn Regional Police and we feel the police actcd EXACTLY as re(lLested. There wasi5fo requCest to block off anv pari' of Brock Se-., nor wvas there élnv requcst to re-rou te traffic. We would suggest that orgafizations plannfing, similar functions in the future take the tirne 10 meet with Staff Sargeant Doug Bulloch aI the 18 Division (Whitby) station on Rossland Rd. and inform himn of any special requests. fie'll listen and give whalever lielp he can ...he's even been known lu come in on his days off to help with parades in Whiltby. Someone wants to put a muzzle on MPP Godtrey EDITOR'S NOTE: It seemns somneone would like to put a muzzle on Durham West NDP MPP Charles Godfrey. Permanenîly! The outspoken Dr. Godfrey somnehow managed 10 smuggle this correspondence past the heavily guarded Queen's Park Wall and circulate it to the local media in hopes of scaring off bis enemnies. This, then, is his story, a story guaranbeed to chili the bones of any Pickering Airport opponent. Be forewarned, il is a gruesmorne' talc, a tale flot for weak Neart.. by CHARLES GODFREY Durham West WPP (at least for no w) As a sitting Meniber of the House, 1 would like.to niake It clear that I have flot succurnb- ed to the Marchand malady in that 1 see a Tory behind every tree. Let it be clear there is no paranoia ini this caucus which sees an anti- social democratic junta turning ail. imses intoa contest belween socialism and the good life. However, there -Is no doubt that Ihere is a plot to shuffle me to rny mortal end at a gallop. ,Tht. s lurly evident by the tact that rat poison had been put in mny office. It was first noted approxuniately one week ago in a small square container placed inconspicuously be- hind the hat rack. I did flot allow myself to be duped mbt bhinking that this was a new type of pasta being presented to me from the ethnic members of our caucus 1 did not baste it. The rat poison remained in mny office for approxi- mately four da.ys. I carefuly removed a small amount each day and flushed It down the toilet. The next day the container was again full. It was obvious that someone was closely watching my rate of ingestion and I expect a consultant's report within the next month. The contract is out. The poison disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared on Thursday, May 6. Nothing was left to indicate il had been present. How did I know it was rat poison? I asked our farm critic, Donald MacDonald, who knows al about rats and he readily identificd it. As stated above, this is flot a mentation of a paranoiac, However, there are several vital questions which must be answered--and answered by the ajpropriate governrnent authority. If this poison was flot put, in my office to do me in--who was the target? If it was -to-ra rat, it is the government seheme to poison only NDP office rats and leave Tory rats scotfree? Alternatively, it is common knowledge that many of the younger NDP niembers have their children visit them in their offices. Was there a clear recognition of the danger of Icaving this toxic substance exposed to small A major concern stili rankies in my mind. If they didn't get the rats with poison--what arn I to expect next? Elephant guns? Maybe I'd better ask Jean what to do! EDITOR'S NOTE: It is obvious that Dr. Godfrey missed out on an important lesson during his childhood and during his stint in rnedical school - iLe. don't make faces, you'll look that way for the rest of your life.
