Since that tirne, relations between Quebec and the rest of Canada have improved and the con- front:tions experienced ini the 1 960s have become less frequent. As the years passed, inany of the twinning exchanges established between Quebec Communities and municipalities ini the rcst of Canada have fallen by the wayside. Such is flot the case with the twinning established between the City of L ongueuil and the Town of Whitby in 1969. Counicillor Tom Edwards recently referrcd to the annual visits between. the citizens of.. Whitby and Longueuil as the longest participating cultural twinning programn in Canada. With a record like this, one might 'oveil ask what is the secret of its success. The secret lies in the personal relationships developed between individual people in both communities. Many of those who take part ini the exchange visits have been doing so for several years, and have developed lasting friendships between themselves and citizens of their twin community. But twinning is something that should not become restricted to the saine group of people each year. More citizens of Whitby sliould avail themiselves of the opportun.ity to take part in these exehanges between our town and Longueuil. The citizens of Longueuil are well known for their hospitality, and one has to experience it to see the warmth, enthusiasm and vitality of the French Canadian style of life. This year from June 25 to 27, Longueuil is again acting as host to any Whitby residents who want to take part in the twinning exchange. For those who have neyer visited Quebec or experienced life in French Canada except by reading the newspapers, the opportunity is one that should not be missed. The town clerk's office wants to know by May 31 who will be going, so arrangements can be made. Let's see lots of new faces on this year's twinning exchange, and let's fui that train to Longueuil so that we may keep this unique relationship between two Canadian communities of different backgrounds alive and flourishing for many years to corne. Twinning or "Jumelage", as it is called in French, is the backbone of that national unity with the political figures of the 1 960s and 1 970s feared was crumblîng after 100 years of Confedera tion. With Whitby and Longueuil, national unity is established on a personal basis, which, of course, is the only real way for people of differing cultures and backgrounds to understand each MPP Godf rey appeals to province to keep ou r police station open EDITOR'S NOTE: Following is a copy of a letter sent to Premier William IDavis and Solicitor General J.
