Dr. Ruddy Hospital Length of stay determines servie With the closing of 25 beds and the laying off of 26 staff members, 1976 will be a year of challenge for the Dr. J. O. Ruddy General Hospital C. L. Jenkins, chairinan of the Board of Governors, said Wednesday. Speaking at tlhe hospital's annual meeting, Mr. Jenkins said that the hospital hiad no altèrnative but to follow the instructions of the provincial goverrnment, and stated that employees laid off will reccive preference when openings occur. He also pointed out that there will be timnes when patients will have to wpt for admission to the hospital or to have sorne necessary surgery done, but if everyone co-operates there neecl not be too great a reduction in service. If each patienit's length of stay was cut by 1.5 days this year on the average, the hospital would be able to treat as many patients with 65 beds as it did with 89 beds in 1975, he said. "As things stand now though, we are rated as a l00-bed hospital", he said. "We wll have 65 beds for use in the hospital until major population changes occur, which will put pressure on the hospital system and force re-operdng of the beds now close d". Mr. Jenkins reported further that the boards of the six hospitals in the Durham Region proposed to the Region of Durham the formation of a Health . Service Board with planning functions as an alternative to a district health council. The brief has been' referred to the social services cornmittee of the region for study. Administrator John Kunet. sky reported that the hospital had a good record in 1975, perforrning well during a disaster exercise last Nov- emiber, obtaining a renewal of its laboratory licence, and receiving an award fromn the Ontario Hospital Association for having the lowest ii- dence of lost-timie accidents per 1 ,000 hours of work in competition with similar sized hospitals in the province. Mr. Kunetsky reported that the resuits of a patient questionnaire early this year indicated that 68 per cent of the patients graded the care they received at the hospital as excellent, 22 per cent thought it was good, and seven per cent said it was fair. The rnost corninon cause of complaint was about smoking by other patients and visitors. Echoing M r. Jenkins' comments, Mr. Kunetsky said 20%/oOFF ALL FABRICS SINGER'S shawa Centre Sale Ends Sat., Aprit 3, 1976 that if each patient last year had stayed in hospital onc day less, 467 more patients could have received treatment Special S Savings Accounts Calculated on your Minimum Nlonthly Balance Member Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation VICTORJMAd [0GREY TRUST COMPANY SINCE 1 889 Keith Lawes Manager 308 Dundas St., W.
