WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19,1975, PAGE 3 Andrew Antenna's products all over the world Throughout Canada and the world where products of the telecommunications in- dustry are used, there is likely some equipment that was made in the Town of Whitby. Richard Matthews, Presi- dent of Andrew Antenna Co. Ltd., outlined the work of his company at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club, explain- ing the wide variety of places where his Whitby-made pro- ducts are used. For instance, lie said, it was AndreW Antennas in Mexico that brought television coverage of the 1968 Olym- pics to North America, and are bringing television to the Eskimos in Canada's north- land. The Andrew Antenna plant is located on Beech Street where it was estab- lished in 1954, and has been expanded in 1961 and 1967. The company has 130 employees, with a $l½ mil- lion payroll, and does a $7 million business in Canada alone, said Mr. Mat thews. Many international visitors come to the company's office and when they do. Mr. Matt- hews flys the flag of the visiting country from a pole on the lawn. The latest visitors were from Sweden, two weeks ago. Andrew Antenna manu- factures antennas, coaxial cable, and eliptical wave- guides, and sells its products to all major telephone and Hydro companies in Canada, to public utilities and govern- ment agencies, he said. Since establishing an as- sembly plant and test tower system trr 200 acres north- west of Ashburn in 1971, Andrew Antenna, has been manufacturing earth station antenna for Telesat danada, a satelite communcations net- work for the far north. Mr. Matthews said his com pany has sold more than 4C antennas to Telesat Canada representing more than 9C per cent of its antenna instal lations. One at Dawson City in the Yukon is bringing tele vision via satelite to the Eski mos for the first time. Coun. Emm can start praying right now Whitby Councillor Gerry Emm, admitted at the most recent regular council meet- ing that he is not God, would like to speak to Him or Her, whaiever the case may be. Mr. Emm will make a motion at the next regular council meeting that each meeting be opened with a prayer. He wil also make a motion to ban smoking in the council chambers. Mr. Emm had better start praying over this one because, besides him, there is only one other non- smoker on the psent çoun- cil. The two other council members smoke so when Mr. Emm makes his motion, it will probably be tied and lost. BE A BLOôD DONOR The earth station antennas are 26½ feet in diameter, and must be built in sections rather than assembled as single units, he said. Andrew Antenna has sup- plied radar antennasfor four major Canadian airports fror its Ashburn building, and is' presently negotiating to butld a cable manufacturing centre there. Andrew Antennas can be found in such far away places as Egypt, where one was in- stalled by RCA of Montreal, and the Philippines where one is located at the Clark Air Force Base, sàid Mr. Matthews. A nurnber of antennas manufactured in Whitby are located in British Columbia as part of that province's a small antenna from Whitby in the astronromy departinent of the University of British Columbia. There is also an antenna system linking Uranium City Alberta, with Fort Smith in the North West Territories, said Mr. Matthews. Mr. Matthews has been involved in the communica- tions business since the 1940's, and is also an active member of the Whitby Rotary Club. CARL MANTZ, senior citizen, businessman, past newspaper editor and publisher; originator of the County Town Carnival, Meals Without Wheels, Whitby YMCA, etc., etc., and winner of Whitby's outstanding citizen award for 1974 of 111 Burns St. E. 1 first met Bruno Harilaid in 1964 when I was at a Whitby Planning Board meeting. 1 have been active in the Whitby business and political scene for more than 30 years. I have seen politicians promise at élection time. The Town of Whitby cannot afford a politician's promise. Bruno believes in freedom of speech and constructive communication. He supports the concept of public transportation, and is a successful businessman of wide experience. Bruno Harilaid believes in less bureaucracy and the right of senior citizens to govern themselves, their recreational facilities included. Bruno Harilaid would be a good Mayor for the Town DEC. lst YOUR VOTE COUNTS . ..
