Cross Country meet Today boys and girls aged nine and over will be com- petiQg in the Durham Elemen- tary Teachers' Association Cross Country Meet. The competitors reptesent schools throughout the board and have won in their area meets prior to advancing to this final. Cross country is a type of long distance running. Run- ners race through hills, fields, woods and even streams. There is no record for cross country because in each race the course is different. The average distance is 1-l½miles for girls and 1¼ - 2 miles for boys. Cross country is a team sport. Each team is made up of six runners. The Durham age •categories go from 10 and under uo to 14. This means that each school can have 50 students partici- pating on the school teams. Each team counts only the first four runner to complete the team total. The lowest total wins. In order to be a good runner you must practice daily. Exercises, wind-sprints and distance running are part of the daily work out. How do the children feel about cross country? Here are some of the comments made by students at one of the area schools. "When we condition for cross country we just don't run, we make sure our muscles aren't tight so we won't pull a muscle".
