PAGE'15, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1975, WHITBY FREE PRESS £LAY LINDSAY SUNDAY Senior Warriors warming upfor upcoming seasoni "Thie Warriors are looking very good, and working very liard," accorditig to player- mnanager Mike Keenan. Keen- an, who was interviewed following practice last Satur- day night, said, "tlise first week of practice was very encouraging, and we feel that things are going to get a lot better." The Warriors, entering their second season with a new name, and with Keenan and ex-pro Howie Menard splitting the coaching duties, started practising on Septcrn- ber 15 with more thian 50 hopefuls taking to die ice. By the end of the first weck, the number had been pared to 26, but Keenan said, "we' ve got a few more players corning in next week, players of proven Senior 'A' calibre, who will fit in well with the boys aiready here.- Tops among these players are Tom Polonic and BIII Lastic whio played last -year with Brant- ford Foresters." The arrivai of Polonic and Lastic will put the pressure on returning defencernen Steve H-unt, Bill M'îrray, Gord McCosh, 'and Calvin Pettit. According to Keenan "these boys, along with Bob Kirk, who played last year in the International League, have played very well so far, With the addition of Polonic and Lastie, choosing the best four or fîve will be veîy difficuit." Kuenan and Menard face an equally difficuit task when it cornes to slecting the best forwards. Returning players like Greg Bodnar, Peter Vi- ponid, and GAîy Milroy are being challenged strongly by the newcomers to the tearn. Topping th e list of challengers is Menard hiimself. The diminutive centre was an ail-star in the American League and saw action in the N.H.L. with Chicago and Los Angeles. Last year, lie was with the Baltimore Clippers until they folded just after Christmas. "llowiL.has noth- ing to prove," said Keenan "but he's working hard, and showing us ail how its donc." Other newcomners who have impressed Keenan ini- clude Paul Raymer, Doug Kecler, Steve Heathwood, and Mike Noonan. Both Raymner and Keeler have had professional experience, and Heakhwood played last year in the U.S.H.L. "Noonan has been a very pleasant surprise," said Keenan, "lie husties ail the time, and his drive and energy should fit in well with us." Noonan played last year with the Whitby Knob Hil Farins of the Provincial Junior 'A' Le ague. The Warriors are set in goal with Bruce Durno, last year's team and league Most Valuable Player and, second ing a number of backup goal- tenders, and of these, Keenan feels Brian Wilson from Lon- don of the Continental Sen. lor League has been most impressive to date. "We are definitely not standing pat," Keenan said, " ewe are. going to improve on last year's third place finish and we think that the players in camp wil make this happen." The Warriors open their exhibition schedule Sunday at 7:30 p.m. when they take on the Lindsay Lancers, the league's. newest entry, at Iroquois Park. The Whitby Warriors of the Ontario Hockey Association Senior 'A' league are warm* ing up for the upcoming season. The Warriors play their first of four exhibition garnes on Sunday at 7:30 at Iroquois Park Arena against Lindsay Lancers. The Warriors finally have a new coach, John MacMillan.
