PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY., UNE 25,1975, WHITBY FREE PRESS acsremain With the Eastern Ontario Basebafil Association' season well. underway the Whitby Big Macs in the Bantam serles remain the only unbeaten Whitby club in the Eastern Ontario ranks. The unbeaten string of the Reds ini the Midget sertes camne to an end at Oshawa's Kinsmen Stadiurn when the Oshawa Legionaires handed the Reds their first defeat of the seasô-n, wmning 6-2. In an earlier meeting the gaine ended ini a 2-2 deadlock. The Big Macs carne close to hav- ing t heir wmn streak snapped when they could only manage a tie with Ajax, and two nigh ts earlier at Peel Park liad to overcome a 6-0» deficit to edge Oshawa in1 the last of the nlnth 7-6. The 7-6 thriller between the Big Macs and Oshawa caine on the heels of another tense affair played the nlght- before at Peel between the Whitby Legionaires 'and Lindsay, mi peewee competi- tion. This contest went beyond the seven inning regulation gaine for peewees and was not settled until the nmnth when Whitby managed to get a mn to win 1-0. Twice the Legionaires had the bases loaded but failed to score and they outhit the opposition 9-4 but they couldn't put their safeties together to make them count. Mike Woling who- also picked up the wiri, led the Leglon- aires at the plate with a double aiid a single, Steve Gallagher had a pair of singles an outputniatched by Greg Rlch whlle Mark Kennedy, Dennis Fiulton and Dave Ciehanskie each had singes. Greg Rcli, playing second base for the Legionaires rnade the outstanding defensive play of the gamne knocklng down a lime shot whlch, had it gotten tlirough, would have meant trouble. The Legion- aires didn't faire so well in Royal Canadian Legion Tournmnit play dropping a- 10-2 decision to Oshawa in the flirst gaine of t.he tourney played at Peel Park on Satur- day. The Reds should have saved some of the runs they picked up earlier in the week when they mnet Ajax, for their gaine against Oshawa. The Ajax affaix- ended with the Reds winning 20-0. Brett Hoffman and Camn Murkar led the Whitby club at the plate, eacli coming through with a double and two singles Doug Shearer and Kirk Roberts each had a double and single, John Heffer had a pair of sirigles, Rob Hanna a double anid Steve Tutton a singles. Ajax had a terrible night in the field, committing costly errc»rs which helped stretch the lop-sided score. Camn Murkar started on the mound for the Reds and worked the first five innings, striking out ten, giving up a lone single and flot yielding a walk. Carn O'Donnell fin- ish-ed the gaine on the rnound giving up oine single. MIurkar took hiiscl f out of die garne when Le began ta develop a stiff shoulder. The Reds could have used some of those twenty runs two nights later at Oshawa's Kinsmen stadium whien they could only manage one earned run off Rob Maddock in a gaine which ended 6-2 for the Legionaires. Whitby's other irun came on a throwing unea>t.en error by the Oshawa catcher. In their earller meeting the two clubs ended 2-2 but this time around the Legionaires had a big four run founth lnning to go out ln front 4-1 after the Reds had pickedup a 1 -0 lead in the second. Kirk Roberts with a pair of singes and Cam O'Donnell were the only Whitby players to hit safely. Camn Mudcar was on the' mound for the Reds but was well below his usual fori and took the 1loss. The Reds other southpaw Dave McWhirter camne on in relief. Although they were impotent at the plate, the Reds carne up with the defen- sive highlight of the evening. when Jody Turner running out with his back ta the in- field, froin his second ' base position, pulled in a catch over his shoulder that drew an ovation froin the Oshawa fans. The Big Ma cs in the Ban- tami series have managed to keep their win streak intact but just barely. They came close to losing it at Peel Park when they h osted the Oshawa Bantain Legionaires, and carne from behind 6-0 10 win it 7-6 in the ninth. The Big Macs weren't having any success against BiH Collier, Oshawa's towering right-hander who stretches out to 6 feet 5 inches which is quite a size for a 14 year old, and it appeared as if the game was over until Collier developed control problemns, was pulled, and replaced by a parade of three Oshawa hurlers. The Big Macs taok to the offenings of the new mound staff and turned the game around with a pair of runs in the sevcnth, three in dic eighth, and thien sent thc fans into an uproar with a pair of runs in the battoin of the ninth for the 7-6 triumph Greg Puchalskie scor- ing on Greg Tushingham's single. Tushinghamn just missed putting the gaine away carlier with a blast that was just foui with dhe bases loaded. Larry Chizen and S ALE Mark MacDonald shareci the pltching duties with MacDon- ald coming into the gaine in the stxth and getting the wln. Fred Petryshyn'led the club at the plate with th-ree singles, while Mike, Gallagher and Peter Foran each had a pair or singes. In Ajax, the Big Macs, scrambled to a 3-3 tie and came close to losing, getting their third mun to square it up in te ninth. John Heasip, the Big Macs left- hander, started and gave way to Fred Petryshyn their other southpaw in the third the duo holding Ajax to four hits. The Big Macs picked up six hits, a triple by Mike Gallagher, a double by Kevin McLellan, and singles by Greg Tushingham, Fred Petryshyn, Greg Puchalskl and Larry Chizen.
