Their big selling point is that not having to have numer- ous staff waiting on customers they can pass the savings on to the customer in the form of lower gas prices..usually about tivo cents a gallon. So if your average :fi/i-up' is around $12 (or about 20 gallons) you can expect to save about 40 cents by doing-t yourself at one of these self-serve gas bars.' On the other hand if your usual expenditure is $S (or about 8.3 gallons) your savîngs amounts to about 16 cents. Let's look at the situation on a yearly basis. Let's say you re an average driver totalling about 12,000 miles-a-year and your car averages 20 miles per gallon. We hope, through the Ontario Humane Society, to make the lot of our furry friends a better one. Local neutering and spaying programs and animal care lectures are two ways to achieve this. Whitby's Joy Thompson Appoînted, to Cm ite ýWhitby Councillor J oy Thompson has bet n appointed to the resolutions committee of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AM0) . The appointment came as a resuit of Councillor Thomp- son submitting her..name to be put on -a committee after she attended the'annual AMO convention last August. AMO is made up of repre- sentatives from varlous municipalities in Ontario. Its purpose is tp submit briefs on government policy to other governmrrents at the regional, provincial and federal levels. AMO also studies concerns of various municipalities. The resolutions committee consists of approxim'nately a dozen mayors and counicilors from municipalities in the province. This body receives the resolutiofis from munici- paliti-es in Ontario which suggest changes in govern- ment policy. 1 The committee then re- viedws these resolutions to decide if they should be supported or not at AMO's annual convention. Sen'ior Centre. The property at the corner of Brock and Piýt Streets has been rezoned to allow con- struction of a senior citizens' centre on the property. The rezoning bylaw was introduced by Councillor Joy Thompson during dile special counicil meeting at which the town's 1975 budget was passed. Councillor Thompson, in introducing the bylaw, said that the centre is a much needed facility which could house 300 senior citizens. She pointed out that, if the bylaw was passed, council could get a federal grant and possibly buld the centre; be- fore the year is over. Deputy-clerk Brian Swit- zer said that council could get a. 100 per cent federal grant if the wvork is begun beforc May 3 1. Councillor Jini Gartshore opposed- the bylaw, saying that thec centre is included in the capital budget. Councillor Gerry Erm first opposed the bylaw because he-wants to wait two or three weeks to find out what wilLhappen to the pro- vincial registry ottice on Centre Street. At present, the province is considering relocating the centre. Counèfllor Emm feels that the registry office property would be an excellent site for the senior citizens' centre. Councillor' Tom Edwards although supporting the centre, voiced some opposi- tion to the bylaw. He said that he, like Fin- ance Chairman Jimn Gartshore, though t that the. budget would be the only item on the agenda. Instead, Councillor Ed- wards pointed out, many topics were discussed in die meeting. "Let's quit poli- ticking", lie said. He felt that there are many minor pro- blems w hich need to be deait with. Councillor Thompson res- ponded to dihe statemnents made by Councillors Emm and Edwards To Councillor Emrn, she said the senior citizens need- the centre now. However, Councillor Emm voted in favour of the by-laW. THE WHITBY FREE PRESS (Voice of the County Town) Hometown paper of Whitby, Brooklin, Myrtie and Ashburn also serving Ajax and Pickering.
