Words froa West Lynd. byNmMnI 1 spoke with Bill Hoffman earlier this week and hie asked me to remind you folks once again of the W.L.C.A. Dance beîpg held this Friday, January 3l1st at 8:30 p.rn. in the Heydenshore Pavfiion. The dance is, as you know, In support of the Whitby Chapter of the ' Ontario Heart Foundation, and BUI is especially anxious that as-many people from all parts of Whitby attend as possible. The price of admission is only $7.00 per couple and ail proceeds go to the Heart Fund. Bill has tried very hard to inqke this particular dance a success. He has arranged for Hisý Honour, Mayor Newman to attend, and since the Heart Foindation's theme is "roses for research",each of the ladies ý,ho attend wfll receive a free rose. Sounds like a good night and 1 hope to see you there. If you stli don't have your ticket, give BUI a caîl at 668-7170. Whitby McDonaid's Dance Friday, February 7th is the night for the Whitby Mac's dance. It sounds lîke a good night as well. AI Armstrong, who is working hard on this night told me that the live band, the Dîck Carnelius Quartet, is super and that they have planned a fabulous grand prize. Tickets for this dance are $7.00 a couple and are avail- able from a number of sources. You can cati AI at 668- 9837 or Greg Steffler at 723-9348, or at the box office at Iroquois Park ,or at the Macs' homne gaines. This is another all-Whitby event, and 1 hope that as many people as possible can corne out and support It. W.L.C.A. Elections The last couple of weeks 1 have mentioned the forth- coming W.L.C.A. Executive Elections. I asked each timne for people to corne forwatd tO work on a Norninating Committee. Well, the appeal and some independent work by Ed Dawson, has paid off and there are now six people ocm the Commnittee. They are Ed Dawson (668-9856), Mel Smith (668-6528), John Giles (668-7485), Leon Thorburn (668-- 3606), Doug Hoiweg (668-6202) and myself. This cornmittee has two purposes. Thiey actually run the elections which wil be held sorne time in March, and they are to try to attract as many good candidates as they can. Elections will be heid for Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and for two Directors and any memrber of the Association is eligible to run. There will also be an election for the office of President but only members of the present executive are eligible to run. The Association is pretty weli-known by now. What the executive have done over the past year is well-known. You may agree with what has been done and want it to continue you may want to go further in some areas, or you mnay wish to change things. Whatever your opinion is, if you are a member of and support the Association, you should becorne involved in the elections and perhaps even become a candidate. If you do want to get involved in this way, eall the N ominating Committee and let us know. This is a short columni. Next week it should be longer what with the dances etc. Sce you thien. Broo>0klin May Get More i',.rei Bell Canada has recog- nized the need for local cail- ing between the Ajax-Picker- ing and Brooklin and Ajax- Pickeing and Markhamn exchanges. Plans to intro- duce' calling to Brooklin should be implemented in late 1976, and to Markham late in 1977, W.- L. Turnham, local Bell Canada manager, said recently. The addition of the above free caling areas will not require further rate changes. Customers in -the Ajax- Pickering (683) exchange, have voted in favour of ex- panding their local calling to include Toronto exchanges in the Metro area on a two way basis. Some 75 per cent of.those who replied were in favour of the proposed plan. Thiere VanLin es Mo ves Here North American Van Lines has offlcially moved its head office from Pickering to Whitby. The moving company 's mnove to a three-acre site in the Whitby Industrial Park at the corner of Hopkins Street and Champlain Avenue was cornpleted last Wednesday. The Whitby head office will serve as national dis- patch headquarters. Ail mov- ing jobs ini Canada will be co-ordinated here. The company is one of the largest movers in die world, with 1,000 agents through- out the world. 135 of themn are in Canada. North American Van Lines employs 550 people in Canada, with .50 working at the Whitby Head office. The official opening, whiich featured a wine and cheese party, was attended by several people including three executives from the Amnerican office of the com- pany. Canadian executives are Glenn Rupp, president; John Skinner, Ted Clark and Tomn Fagan, vice-presidents; and Don Fauglit, operations mian- ager. e Caiiing was a ý60 per cent (4024) return of the 6701 survey cards sent out in November. 1The proposal would allow' cails, without long distance charges, to exchange in the Metropolitan Toronto area: Agincourt, Scarborough, West Hill, Toronto, New Toronto - Islington, Weston and Willowdale-Don Mâls. The change would take effect late in 1976, at which time the present optional one way plan would be discontin- ued. WHITBY FREE PRESS.
