PAGE 6, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1975, WHITBY FREE PRESS This is Fun??9 Last weekend somne skling buddies suggested wo aIl pile into a car and head for Quebec where it is rumourod they have enough snow to ski on thisyoar. Since the skiing was terrible in this area 1 figured 1 had nothing to Jose. Friday aftornoon six of us, -complote with ski gear and Iuggage, piled into an aging Oldsmobile and off we wont to Quebec. Excopt for the fact that six guys in an Olds doesn't exactly leave roomn for anything more strenuous than breathing, the trip to Mt. Tremblant was rathor un- eventful. About the only thing that happened-other than the usual story telling and stretching of the truth to ridicu- lous lengths was the ribbing of one of our skiers. Although ho had skied before, it- was many years ago and*ho stiil considered himself a beginnor. Fi e-knîeiwthat when'thé*y cali a mountain a mountaini in Quebec there's a good chance it might be very high as opposed to Hamilton which cails thoir local pimple in the landscape, Hamilton Moututain. Halfway up the Autoroute our beginner skier had his first feelings of uneasiness when we started entering ski country. Ail through the trip up we had been kiddîng hirn about how high Mt. Tremblant was so when ho saw the first o f the ski areas and had to crane his neck to see the summits ho began to get nervous.' He would point to an area as we passed il and ask us how it compared lir heigb t ÏP to Mt. Tremblant wbero we were heading. 0f course we always exagerrated the companison just to see his face blanche. But after going past so many areas and hearing so much truth bending our beginner decided to put the whole thing out of bis mind until the morning when ho would. see exactly for himself how higb Mt. Tremblant really was. The next morning on the way to the mountain [rom our -motel our novice got bis first look and made a scoffing re- mark that it realy didn't look so ominous. Then we- informed bim we were still six miles from the mountain and hie almost fainted. By the tîme we were driving into the parking lot at the base of the hill hie as digging out a prayer book and trying to convince us it was a bad day for skiing. I don't have to tell you how rnuch the other five of us were looking forward to seeing our beginner squirm at the sigbt of this huge mountain in front - knowing the cbairl.ift up to the peak wouldn't be bad but [rom there he had to try to romain alive while skiing down to the bottom again. Put a buneh of guys together and for some sick reason they always get a perverse thrill out of seeing a buddy risk life and limb in the name of sport and "fun". Although Grog was reluctant to even put on bis boots we talked him into donning al bis ski gear by threatening to tic him up and throw hlm bodily on the chairlift. We al skied to the cbairlift and got on, two at a time. 1 was hop- ing to get on the same chair lift with Greg because 1 wanted to see the look on bis face when ho roalized the chairlift you can see [rom tho bottom disappears into the cloud cover but only takes you halfway up the mounitain. At the balfway point you have to got off one chairlift and got on another which will take you to the peak. 1 had to settie for second best and get on a chair ahead of Grog but just as we neared the top of the first lift - within sight of the bottom of the second lift which takes you to the top - 1 looked back down the liftline at Grog in the chair behind me and 1 pointed to the right where 1 knew ho would get his flrst look at the second lift which takesyou to the top. Cal me sadistie, perverted and aIl the rest but I couldn't belp it. When 1 saw his face screw up in awesome surprise 1 just burst out laughing. 1 was stfll laughing wben we got off the first lift. Poor Grog was trapped. Without the rest of us ho didn't know how to get down the mountain and the rest of us were going over to the second lift ta get to the summit SO be had no cboice but to reluctantly follow like a sheep ta the slaughter. Even the lift operator had to laugh at the look on Grogs face. Well to make a long disaster short, Grog eventually made it down the mountain, looking like the abominable snow- man - coverod from head ta foot with the snow.:he was sapposed ta ski.-on - -not in. His knees were shaking, his nerves were shot and ho could hardly speak without bis voice quivering. The part that roallybroke us up was when ho quietly mumbled, "This is fun?" I hate to admit it but the rest of us thought tho whole thing was hilariously fun- ny! But, if you think that's ffunny read on noxt week and 111l tefi you about'the dumb stunt the wbole bunch did on the return trip home. cNcableb6 LISTINGS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22nd 4:30 AIl About 5: 00 Durham Report with Bruce McArthur 6:00 Sports with Dave Stewart and Evening Report with Ron Folk 6:30 Durham Today with Peter Brouwer 7:00 Whitby Thon and Now 7:30 Education Scene with Gea.
