MI 7-7 '~~ PAGE 12, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1974, WHITBY F REE PRESS Brooklin Bylines Happy New Year! Good health, happiness, and peace to you all throughout 1975.....prosperity seems over optimist tic these days, when it's all that one can do to keep up with inflation. Perhaps we made a start on tackling that problem at the end of 1974, when public pressure and disapproval helpQd to squash the idea of a 50 percent pay raise to our Federal M.P.s. I hope that ALL politicians take note.....the public doesn't always think that government ideas are beneficial to the community and that they, the public, do have a voice and a say in the running of the community's affairs. Before I go into 1975 I have to mention a delightful evening that I spent at Meadowcrest School in December. The occasion was the 1st Brooklin Guides 2nd Annual Pot- Luck Supper. About 50 parents attended.....fathers as well as mothers!.....as well as some special guests; the principal of the school, Mr. Batten and his wife; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wallace; Mr. Bob Heron; the janitors of the school and yours truly. I'm sure I can speak for all the guests present... it was a most enjoyable evening of good food - provided by the generous parents; good' company - 30 guides between the ages of 10 and 14 years, their leader Mrs. Audrey Park- er; and their commissioner, Mrs. Eunice Stocks;-and lively entertainment. The girls produced three very good dramatic sketches, tho' my favourite has to be the one on our own Council. These girls had visited Council previously. and the skit, I presume, is the result of that visit and what they have also read in the press regarding certain topics. Talk about 'out of the nouths of babes'. Kim Rowland and Cheryl Parker were hilarious as Councillors Thompson and Lovelock..... Don, you would really have enjoyed it. And as I assured Bill Wallace, who seemed to enjoy it as rnuch as myself, I did not help to write that script.....tho' it echoed many of my sentiments exactly! Congratulations to ail of you girls, and to your parents and guests who participated in the activities, (even Fred and Ray) and to Mrs. Parker whose obvious enthusiasm and interest in the girls is the keynote to a fine Girl Guide group. Right, so onto what's going on this week. Over at the children's library on the afternoons of the 2nd and 3rd of January, there will be a continuous showing of short cartoon type films for the pre-schoolers to grade 6 age range. No starting time.....just drop in any time during the afternoon. January 3rd is also the date of the Y.M.CA. Camp Re- Union. It will be held at the Brooklin United Church from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All the children who attended the various camps held by the 'Y' during the summer are in- vited to attend.....and to bring a friend if they wish. It costs $2 for the day.....bring your lunch (drinks are pro- vided). If you live out of Brooklin then there will be a bus service.....call the 'Y' for further de tails. It's enrollment time for the 'Y'. And as usual they are offering various programs up here in Brooklin. Create together begins on Friday, January 10, at the United Church Hall in Brooklin. It will run for 10 weeks, from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. every Friday. Mrs. Daphne Kohl is once again organizing the mother's -part of the program, while Mrs. Eleanor Holman will be in charge of the children. The cost will be $12 for 'Y' members and $15 for non-members. Also at the United Church, and again from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., but this time on a Wednesday morning starting on January 8, is the other mothers' and children's program 'Ladies Take-a-Break'. Actually you do not need to have children to participate. It's a morning of Yoga type exer- cise, coffee, good company and a variety of subjects to help chase away those mid-week blahs. Mrs. Holman once again provides for the children with some very expert help, while the ladies find out what Mrs. Crangle has arranged for them. Costs are $5 for members and $8 for non-members. A new programme is the 'Y' Co-Op Play School. It is startinig on January 14th at Meadowcrest School for the 2-6 year olds. It's from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. ori Tuesdays Cont'd on P. 16
