WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1974, PAGE 5 KALMINS ON Demeter Murder Trial in London LONDON, Ontario - Seven weeks ago this sleepy, dreary-looking mid-sized hamlet in the heart of Middlesex County, about 120 miles west of Toronto, was as peaceful as the Thames River which quietly runs through the city. People of this rather dull and somewhat provincial outpost have never heard of Peter Demeter, his wife Christina, jet- set model Marina Hundt or an unlikely name like Joseph Pomerant. But, today most of the Londoners are very much aware of what goes on each morning and afternoon at the grey, but modern-looking building, better known as the Middle- sex County courthouse, conveniently located in the down- town area of the city. Now for some time a wealthy Mississauga builder, by the name of Peter Demeter is on trial accused of a contract murder of his pretty, 32-year-old wife Christina whose body was found in a pool of blood inside the Demeter garage. The Crown alleges that Christina was murdered because of the so-called "other woman", mainly the 29- year-old Marina Hundt who has been described by the German publication "Neue Illustrierte Revue" as Peter Demeter's "sex bomb". The magazine also reported that Christina was seen dating another millionaire, shortly before her marriage to Peter Demeter. The German maga- zine now lias a correspondent from Vienna who is cover- ing the trial for the "Neue Revue". I will skip the sordid details which you may have read elsewhere. At times it appears that events which take place out- side the courthouse are as fascinating as those which are aired inside the No. 2 courtroom on the 14th floor. For instance, news photographers are kept busy trying to etch the key figures in the Demeter trial. I was extremely fort- unate to have been able to photograph Marina Hundt, Peter Demeter and the defence team. One could say that I scored a small victory by sur- prising Marina Hundt and her German-speaking interpreter in a tiny restaurant across the courthouse. As I walked in with my cameras dangling from my neck and shoulder, Marina immediately protested: "Please, don't take my picture". But, lier plea went unanswered. This was too big a moment to be missed. As I started to take some pho- tos, I noticed that my flash unit didn't work. However, I did not push the panic button. In my best German, I explained that the pictures were for a German publication, the Mississauga Times and the Whitby Free Press. Re- luctantly, she agreed to pose for a few shots and even managed to get a beautiful smile. The flash had started to work again and I fired away, recording six different expressions. In the meantime her blonde Gernan inter- preter looked bored and unhappy. About half an hour later, once more I cornered Marina and her friend-this time at the entrance of the courthouse. Getting pictures of Peter Demeter was also not an easy task. He is a tall man, wears a dapper suit and walks very fast. Needless to say, he was very uncooperative. At one point when 1 asked him: "Are you Mr. Demeter?', lie unwillingly replied: "Sorry, I have no comment to make". Thcn, I realized I had spotted the right man. Again with ny Latvian luck, 1 was able to "shoot" Peter twice that day. First, I got pictures of himi at the elevator while he was having a coffee break. At lunch time, I caught him on the street, rushing to the nearby restau- rant. Peter was having lunch at the same hotel where Marina was having hers. But, they are not allowed to sit together. So I was told by colleagues who have spent some time in London, covering the murder trial. Judge Campbell Grant has quite successfully managed to keep the top news stories inside the courthouse. But, these stories can be reported outside Canada. The jury, until now, has been spending many hours outside the No. 2 courtroom as the court proceedings most of the time have been held in cam- era. After each day, the jurors can go home and read the reports in the local press. This is one reason why so many restrictions have been imposed by the presiding judge. While the Demeter trial goes on, Londoners take advantage of the mini-business boom. Hotels and motels are crowded with visitors from many lands. Most of these visitors are newsmen, police officers, detectives, investi- gators, legal experts, fashion models and plain onlookers - anxious to get inside the already overflowing courtroom. Each day hundreds of visitors are turned away by uniform- cd guards at the courthouse. As one businessman put it: "We are having a small bonanza, thanks to the Derneter trial."
