PAGE 4,, WEDNESDAV, OCTOBER 23, 1974, WHI.ITBY FREE PRESS KA LNINS ON. 0 a Hockey 1% Violence Un Canada Like everybody else, 1 have followed fairlý closely the recent hockey games between Tearn Canada '74 and the Russian hockey teamn frorn Moscow. I have seen all the, bloody pictures out of Moscow and read yarns of the so- called ice "war" between the two friendly nations. And, I have corne to a conclusion that the existing hooliganism on ice should be stopped - the sooner the better. But, 'm puzzled why ail this fuss and. muss now? For years, Canadians have bepn playing rough hockey. And, for yeaspeopIe have attended the gamnes, partly to wit- ness highsticking, fistfights, bodychecks, brawls and practi- cally, anything that could infuse some "excitement" for the hockey fans. As a photographer, I cover a fair number of hockey games in and around Toronto. Most of these games are hejd in poorly-lit arenas where ice conditions are not ai- ways ideai. The players (mostly from junior leagues) are young and inexperienced. When two inexperienced teams face each other, roughness is bound to emnerge. For many a player, the game is no longer a sport. The friendly "I win" or "you lose': typeof atmosphere has gone. The game, now, hias been turned into a fierce and frenzied competi- tion. The "challenge" is the dominant word and "we'll beat 'em" has becorne a classic phrase. The coaches tell you, that you should "do this" or "do that". And, if you are unable to foliow their kindly instructions, then sheer physical force is the only alternative left for the players. 0f course, somne outside elemnents corne into'this pîcture too. For instance, an important role is being played by al those power hutngry parents and coaches who keep pushing the kids further and further into this grear national sport of ours. Su, right from the kindergarten day's wc have beeni taught to 'lighit" to '\vin", te "bezat". but ncver. neyer play the gamne just for the fun of' it. Thruughi this kind of mass hysteria. we have achicved a product, better known as Tearn Canada. The Russians, on the o ther hand.',for years have play'cd hockey' quietly and efficiently. Due te discipline and good manners, they have given hockey a pretty' guud naie. l'ni told they wuuld even refrain trurn scoring, il t th opposing team lias lest a member due te a penalty. That, l'd say is a gentleman's approach te a hiockey gaine. But, then came the so-called exhibitïin gamnes betweeni Russia and Canada. And, as the games were played mure uften, the Russians picked up a few pointers from the Canadian players. Need- iess te say, furce and violence wvas net excluded. Therefore, nu une should be surprised to sec what happened in Moscow. 1 think that Teami Canada's Rick Ley whio slugged the Soviet player, shuuld have been jailed for 15S days, as it vas suggested by the Russian cuachi Boris Kulagîn. If bloodshed takes place, then the strong arm of the Soviet law must take ove r. 1 think Canadians should realize that Russian players can be as tough and brutal, if the occasion arises. Su. let's start 'to le rn this game properly - once and fcr ail!
