PAGE 6, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1974, WHITBY FREE PRESS KALNINS ON.. 'Vocation Alex Kainins is on vacation somnewhere in the United States. His column will resume shortly. Today's guest column is written by James Baley, reporter for the Missis- sauga limes. When it comes to oppressed minorities, it seems to me *we have too long refused to recognize one of the largest and most put-upon groups in the society: the lazy. We have up to now identified such diverse elements of society as Indiatis, gays, and women as victims of op- pression, and quite often they probably are, but for themn, at. least, there can always be found at least a few defenders. The lazy person, however, stands alone. Although he may be hounded throughout his life by bis employer, his spouse, his relatives and his friends, he rarely fights back - usually because he can't be bothered. Although he cannot help the way he was born any more than members of other minorities, for him there is na public acceptance. It's a wrong that should be righted. 've been thinking of organizing some kind of pressure group, with a self-explanatory namne like the Indolent Liberation Front, to petition the governiment for legisla- tion protecting the rights of citizens like myself who are incapable by accident of birth of obtaining their rightful role in society. There are a number of steps which might be taken to spare the lethargic the pain and embarassment which society inflicts upon them. For example, ail those posters and signs which read "We Try Harder" are disturbing to us, because we don't. Or how about those desk signs that say "Do It Now." Well, no matter how hard we try, we, the lazy, know in the deepest depths of our souls, that we're not going to do it now, that we may not do it tomor- row, and if we're lucky, we may flot ever do it. These wîdely-circulated exhortations are, to us, a forin of hate literature. You can rest assured we would do somne- thing about them, if we had the energy. Many people seem to forget the debt that they owe the inactive. In a sense, we are the catalyst upon which al society's productive interactions depend. Who would do any work at ail, if he didn't have somebody around the plant or office who made hîm look good by working even less? Stilli Up for Grabs.,,, counsellors, personnel managers, social workers, and govern- ment bureaucrats who would be unemployed if they didn't have us around to counsel and attempt to motivate. Worse think how many would be unemployed if they ever suc- ceeded. We feel no bitterness towards the hard-working, it should be noted. In their zeal to get the job done, to per- formi tasks of monontony and futility, they provoke in us only the most tender feelings of compassion and pity. Neyer will they know the Joy one feels as hie rolîs back into bed after turning off alarm clock's urgent sumnmons, or the resulting sense of adventure one experiences, when he sneaks into work a haîf-hour late. Neyer will they feel that sense of accomplishment that cornes to the worker who looks up from his desk at 5:00, p.rn. and realizes that he hasn't done a blessed thing ail day. And it should be noted that our apathy does flot neces- sarily lead to any lessening of productivity, as is commonly believed. In the lazy person is often found the twin virtue of incompetence, with the result that whatever work hie does is done badly. That means that a more energetic type has to take over somne of his responsibilities if the job is to get done. Since he is also usually more competent, it naturally follows that the end result is that much better. His lazy co-worker is happy because hie maintains his employment without a great deal of effort, and he is happy in the knowledge that he can do the work of two men. His boss is even happy because hie is relieved of the res- ponsibility of firing the non-worker and thus reducing his sphere of authority by one. Somneday 1 M going to collect my thoughts on the merits of shiftlessness, and write them up ini a book entitled, "In Praise of Sloth." Not right now, though l Im just not in the mood. A large gap was left lb -the Tyrreil team this season with the retirement of World Champion Jackiç .Stewart, but his replacement Jody Scheckter is filling the posi- tion capably, holding down- second place at present with a total of 41 points. Third place and 37 points belong to Emerson Fittipaldi who is driving a McLaren-Ford. AI- so0 still in contention are Car- los Reutemann and Ronnie Peterson who have 24 and 22 points. respectively. The records and- reputa- tions of the.teams and drivers involved in this rare scrarnble for the World Driving Champ- ionship, guarantees that thé race at Mosport will have an air of suspense which no other Canadian Grand Prix has been able to generate. Perhaps the oniy way to pick a favorite in this dash for the most prestigious championship in motor rac- ing, is to base predictions on consistency. In' that case, the favorites 'would be Regazzoni, having failed to pick up points in only two races and Scheckter, missing out in four of the twelve races run this season. f Filmsç
