WHITBY FREE PRESS. WEDNESIJAY, AUGUSI 28th. 1974. PAGE 5 BIRD 'S EYE -/MQOUAI 1 Should Stay Home Any timne I am about to go to another party and make a foot of miyself sornetimie during the course of the evening I hestitate before leaving the house and say to myself, "I should stay home". Past experience lias taughl me that while staying home waîching television may not set the wortd on fire it does keep me out of trouble and infavour with my party friends. keep me out of trouble and in favour wiîh my party friends. Not that they have ever said 100 rnuch but 1 do hear the odd remark. As l'mi greeted at the door the host- ess smiîes at me and says, "Glad you made itl" and then whispers in hier husband's ear, "hide the good china. and glasses and put out extra ashtrays". Now don't think that 1 always manage to break the good glasses during the course of the party. Far from it! You sec some of my friends, and two from the northern region in particular, love t0 go around at a party stealing drinks. that appear to have been careîessly Ieft sitting. One night 1 had tost more than my share of drinks and after an hour and a haîf of partying 1 was stitl annoyingty sober. Now I'm not saying that 1 have to take a drink or three to have fun, far from it, but have you ever been. sober at a party full of drunks? You simply can't converse with them. Everything they say sounds silty and they al taugh and everylhing you say sounds ridiculously logicat and they alI boo. So as 1 said this one night 1 had lost a lot of drinks and I was getting a litte drastie. I mixed myself yet another drink and, de 1er- mined not bo lose this one 1 ctung to it thoroughly resolved not t0 set it dowvn even for a minute. White all this determination was going on a very nice lady came up to me and asked nme if we coutd dance. t was faced with a decision. Dance and stay sober after the ioss of yct another drink or turn her down ctaiming rny war wounid was acting up again and begin some serjous tippling. t couldn't make the decision that quickly so t accepted the offer t0 dance and, noticing a drink stealer hovering in the far corner cyeing mie, 1 dccidcd to takc my drink with nie while dancing. You don't have 10 tel me it sounds like rnadness because 1 know A ita -but I îhoughit il was quite logical at the tine. 1 kept the drinlk in one haîid behind niy' back and we proccedcd to do the Frecd Astaire bit when ail of' a sucîden hemusic pickcd up and evcrybody was jumnping up and ,:~. Th 'le lady, gave iuç a poke and said, "Corne on, ge t *1foOSe!" Compte tly lorgeittiin ysel ' i staited'gyrating mny hips, shu'fling m1y lcet and waving rniy ams. The glass stayed in nmy hand but the drinik, ice cubes and ail, mnade a graceful arc tlirough the air and dropped. almosi st iin tact, dlown the front of' tie lady's radier fuîll and low cul dress_ S She waSnI't .aînused. lnu fact she said a couple of nasties' wh uc tdie rest of' the party stopped to watchi what they thoughit was a karate denonstration. i thouglit perhiaps if 1 told lier about how nîy drinks were always being stolen ....but shie seemed a little distr-acted as runi and Coke trickled out beneath the hiem of lier dress. So you can understand that 1 arn somewhat wary about going to parties - if for no other reason than staying clear of the above-mnentioned lady. I don't mind littie disasiers happening to me within the confines of my own home but in somebody elses place it is difficult at the best of limes. Its as if aIt these disasters are lying in wait for me. Like going mbt the host's bathroomn during. the party and while sitting down discovering there is neither toilet paper or kleenex in the room. After yeling through the door 10 a friend about my problemn and promising to pay him ten bucks nol to tell the rest of the party I gel straightened away only to flush the tolet and have the lever corne off in my hand. You know the worst of il ail is that after pausing by the doorway on my way out 10 a party and tetling myseif 1 should stay home I invariably pass through the same door - way a few hours later mumbling to myseif, "I should have stayed home!"
