Vol. 4, No. 34 WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28th, 1974 WH ITBY-ITES We Visited Longueuil Had a Marvelous Time Din't Want to Leave - By karje Burgess A very tired but happy crowd of Whitbyites filtered slowly off the train at the Oshawa Station Sunday night. We had just concluded the ruost enjoyable of weekends, lwinning with the city of Longueuil, Quebec, for the sixth wonderful year. (We visit Longueuil une year; the next they visit Whitby) Last Friday morning we boarded the train for Mont real, full of excitement and hopes of a successful weekend. We were not disappointed, believe me! The people of Longueuil exîended the warmest hospitality i maginable; we were treated like royalty! From the lime we stepped off the train in Monîreal and received a hearly welcome lu the tearful goodbyes on Sunday, we were lacking for nothing. The people of Longueuil are absolutely marvelous; friendly, warmn and witty. They put us completely at ease, and 6y the end of the weekend many new friendships had been formed. They worked extremely hard to keep us entertained, and what enterîainment it was! The "Festin des gouverneurs" (Feast of the governers) on Friday night was an absolulely unforgettable experience. It took place at the Old Fort on lie Ste-Helene, where we were led down a flight of old stone steps tu a large banquet ruum., We sat on benches at trestle tables and ate, 1 mean we ATE! Tourtieres, soup, Cornish Game Hen (l each!) carrots, corn, VISIT potatues, sugar pie illed out the menui, and as this feast was emulating those of the 1700's, the only utensil we hiad was a knife. At the beginning of the meal everyone was very cautiously picking up their food, but by the end the spirit had moved themn and they were tucking in heartily. (We were protecîed by bibs, and had înioistened napkins tou dean our hands). The entertainment at the feast, accomnpanied by a harp and harpsichord, was without equal. Everyone who waited on tables took their turn in the spotlight and their voices were unrivalled by anyone, professional or amateur> I've had the opportunity to listen toThe 'Festin des Gouver- neurs' - an overwhelming experience! Saturday, after a tour of the Richelieu Valley, we boarded "L'Escale" for a leisurely 5 hour cruise. We had an excellent buffet on board, consisting of cold mneâts and îhree deicious pales. Saturday evening we visited a sugar camp and dined French-Canadian style on maple-cured ham, omelettes putatues, beans and crusty rolîs. An hiour and a haîf lter, we had a corn roast! Sunday morning we attended a bilingual church service, followed by a garden breakfast. After everyone had gone back to the hotel and packed we were A pretty exhausted, but livened Up a little at the farewell cocktail parly. During the weekend we got very attached to the people of Longueuil, and saying 'goodbye' or at least 'au revoir' was very sad. Hopefully we'Il meet ail our friends again next year when Longueuil visits Whitby for the Seventh twinning. I hope we can give them as good a time as they gave us. I don't think we'll ever forget the hospitality and friendship extended tu us. Merci Lorigueuil! LONGUEUI.L TWINNING A total of 93 Whitby resi- dents visited Longueuil, Que- bec on the weekehid.
