The Canadian Tire Midgets took their season opener in Belleville 9 - 4 on the strpngth of a standout pitcbing chore by southpaw Steve Sarginson who yielded only two bits while *striking out 12. The Tiremen, jumped into an 8 - 0 lead in the first inning and this gave them ithe early margin they needed to pull out the victory. Sarginson liclped his won cause with a pair of bits an output matched by Tim Brown. Other Whitby hitters were Alex and Brian Kehoe, Mike Rowley, Cam O'Donnell and Kevin Roche. The Legionaires playing in the E.O.B.A. Pee-Wee series made their '74 debut a big one dumping Ajax 27 - 0 at Cedar Park in Ajax witl- Legionaire right-hander Larry Chizen throwing a no hitter and coming within one runner of a pitcher's "dream", a perfect gai-e. Only one Ajax runner reacbed first base and Ibis was on an error by the Whîtby club. Chlzen notched 15 strikeouts. The Legion- aires pic ked up 1 7 bits with Murray McCorkell leading the way with threc singles, wbile John Wall, Rick Dunpby and Greg Puchalski each added'a pair of safeties. In the gamne against Oshawa the Legionaires were able 10 pick up only two bits off tbeir old teammate John Samanski, with Murray McCorkell and Larry Chizen geîting a double and a single. In the liflock city the Legionaires lost a 1 - 0 heartbreaker with a ]one tally by Peterborough in the fourth inning holding up for the win. Larry Chizen was tagged with the loss but came through with a pitching per- formance whicb is good enough for a win mosi limes, gîving up flive hits and strikinig out 9. The McDonald Big Macs started the week wiîh an exhibition tilt againsi Scarborougli Birchmount and came îhrough with a 12 - 0 vicîory. Cam Murkar started for the Big Macs throwing hitless baseball for flive innings and Dave McWhirter and Mark MacDonald finished the final four witbout yielding a safety 10 complete the no bitt'er. They won their E.OBA. opener by default when they journeyed to Lindsay only to have no one show up at the baIl park. In their home opener againsi Courtice on Stinday the gaine turned out 10 be an unforlunate mis- match of tbe kind whiich doesn'î t4' cither team.
