PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY, A\PRIL 17, 1974, WHITI3Y FREE PRESS Basebali Season To 'Start Soon With the 1974 basebali season only a few weeks away, plans are getting into high gear for the Whitby Minor Basebali Assoc. and this week the W.M.B.A. lias made several important announcements. Gordon Hanna wili be at the helm of Whitby's Junior entry in the Eastern Ontario Basebail Assoc. Well known in area basebail circles, Hanna piayed nîinor basebaîl in Whitby, and senior bail in both Whitby and Oshawa. Since the formation of' the W.M.B.A. in 1969 he has played a leading raie in the activities of the assoc., coaching both bantam and midget clubs, and serving as Pres. of the Whitby organization in 1973. Last year he was also a Director of the Eastern Ontario Basebali Assoc. and a delegate of the E.O.B.A. to the Ontario Basebali Assoc. aind acted as convenor for the Ontario association's Senior and lntermedfiate series. This seaswnihe is a Vice-Pres. of the E.O.B.A. and is in charge of tËe Senior group. Boys in the area of Junior age who are intercsted in trying out for the club are asked to contact coach Hanna iinimediately. The Junior club will again be playing out of E.A. Fairmian, quite possiblv for thelast season since the Whitby Recreation Dep't plans to have the new basebaîl lavout at Iroqtiois Park available for next year. At present the diamiond at E.A. Fairman is the only regulation size field in Whitbv, all the others being of Tyke or Pee-Wee size. so things have becomne quite crowded at Fairman trying ta fit in gaine and practice tin1es for Jr.. Midget and Bantani E.O.13.A. clubs and an expamding house league which hiad five clubs in '73. Celebrate the return of Spring. This will be a loosening up session'only, and will give the coaching staff a start on planning for the upcoming season. The Lasco Steelers heid their third session on Monday at the Anderson gym, a workout highlighted by the taping of some segments to be shown in conjuniction with an upcoming show on local basebali to be seen on Cable TV. Gary Steane and Bob Shearer who are in charge of this year's edition of the Steelers invite any boys who are inter- ested to corne out. Boys born in 1959 or 1960 are eligible for Bantam, those born in 61 and 62 for Pee-Wee. The Council of the Corporation of the Town of Whitby intends to apply to the Ontario Municipal Board for approval to charge the whole of the cost for the construction of a sanitary sewer on Brock Street from the MacDonald-Cartier Freeway (Highway 401) to Dunlop Street, estimated at $250,000.00 as a sewer rate for a period of 10 years upon the lands that will or may derive a benefit therefrom as described in Schedule "A" of this notice. It is proposed to raise the whole of the annuai payments by an annual rate estimated at 0.943 milis.
