PAGE 2,THIJRSDAY, DECEMB ER 2th, 1973, WH ITBY FREE PRESS [u Too oftenl at tItis festive time of the year (d0 we forget the true mleainiig of Christmas and concentr-ate more 011 the miaterialistie side whieh is becoing more doinaniit every year. Christnmas ineamîs differeut thiings to differenti people. To soIUC this is a loniely time withouît friends or famnily to be close to. To others tItis is the tiîne to 'casl-in' hy selling products. But to the lucky ones this ks a time to show appreciatioli to aur loved ones..usually ini the formn of gifts. It's too easy to get carried away ini the claud of excit- ment and nilmeraus festivities and forget to give thanlks ta God for our many mercies. And we ALL have something ta be thankful for. We can be thankful we have roaves over aur heads regardless af whether we have aur OWN roof, or whe- ther aur roof is somebody else's floar. We can also give thanks for having food ta eat. It really daesn't mnatter whether if's hamburger or steak, at least we are eating ......some are nat. Anîd does it really inatter HOW MUCH is ini the saviigs acCoulît? ..... or the clîequiîg ýaccouîit?..or wliQtllr we hiave ait accoulit at ail? If yot're liealthy be thankful..the hospitals, and nmany homes are fulîl of people, other hunmaî beings, whio are tiot. So you clon't owîî a $300 dollar suit, or even own ANY suits..others haive oîîly whiat is on their backs anid somectinies tliis is very littie. And tiien you cati give thanks collectively as we the staff of the Free Press do. We are thankful to the mnany loyal readers and 'supporters who have lielped witl either moral or financial support to keep ailive ain Ofin- unity newspaper ini a comniiiity that lias neyer kept a newspaper alive before. We are thankful to the many residents wlîo contributed to the paper either directly with stories, or indirectly with news tips and suggestions. We are especially indebted to our army of boys and girls who deliver the Free Press every Thursday despite rairi or snow. And a tip of our bats to the parents who give moral support ta their paper carriers wlien the will ta work is at a Iow ebb. We at the Free Press feel that we are helping ta filI the gap left by National media, such as TVbycocenj tratiîtg our editorial efforts on strictly local content. We don't think that other medias, such as out of town newspapers, cati ignore their own locales to give Whitby the space we need, nor are they willing to. To prove ouir point, we did a stîrvey last week (Dec. 1 2) chioosîing tlhe top Oshawa and Ajax weekly niewspapers. We cotinted te e num ber of Whitby stories ini eaich paper. The forty page Oshawa paiper, althougli a fie paper, carried only seven Whitby stories. The Ajax publlicaltîi, iaother good newspaper, cairried only 1l Whitby stories iii 20 pages. Meanwhile last week's edition of the Whithy Uree Press carried over 20 Whitby stories, tiot counting columns or editorials, in only 12 pages. So (>bviously although our number of pages are LESS, we are giving our readers MORE local coverage. And this we feel is the function of a comm- unity newspaper. So an this, aour third Christmas, we would like to express our gratitude to aur many readers and support- New Year.
