PAGE 6, TH URSDA Y, DECEMBER 13, 1973, WH ITBY FR EE PRESS BIRD 'S EVE WIEW -J/M QOUAIL POINDEXTER??3àw Corne on you guys, give me a break. It's the time of the year again when suddenly nobody bas a last name and l'mi going crazy trying to figure out where some of these Christmas cards are coming from. 1 get cards ftrm Poindexter and Arabella. No last name and the post mark is smudged-so 1 can't even tel what country the card is from. It's more than one man can bear. I'm the only Quail in town so 1 figure the card was nieant for me but trying to trace it is a headache. 1 know somebody out there is trying to tip me over the edge. Some nutty friend is sending these cards from a suburb of Port Perry and just making up the namnes. 1The one from Uncle Zeke is a good example. l'm sure I don't have an Uncle Zeke. But you neyer know so 1 have to spend a whole night going through ail the prev- ious years cards and lists to see if there really is an Uncle Zeke. Christmas is the time of the year when we are suppos- ed to be in tht~ spirit of giving so, how corne we always go through our Christmas list and check naines to make sure we only send out the cards we have to. 'The price of an extra 10 cent card and the stamp won't kili me but it sure bugs me to spend hours looking for an uncle or aunt that I'm not sure even exists. What is even worse is getting a card from a casual 'friend from out of town and flot being able to find the address. You know the kind 1 mean. There is always a littie note enclosed with the card or written inside the card. The note usually goes like this: Hi buddy, how have you been lately? 1 stili remember the night we went out to the park .... what a time we had. Fred stili insists hie didn't know there was a bylaw about that but the fine wasn't much anyway and it sure was wortb it. If you ever get a chance to stop in don't forget to drop by and say hello. signed...Viola. When 1 checked the postmark it was Topeka Kansas and I have neyer been to Kansas in my life. Judging by the note I should have gone because somebody had a lot of fun or else 1 was there and had another one of my memorv blanks. I haven't been able to confirin it but I'm sure some- body in the dead letter department of the post office is out to get me. That's the only possible answer. 1 get the craziest letters from places I arn sure 1 haven 't been to and it must be the work of a friend in the post office somewhere. This guy probably looks through the letters and finds a real beaut and then Addresses it to me knowing it will drive me crazy trying to figure out if I really know the sender. But Christmas is the time for getting letters and especially cards without last names. The worst bas to be cards fromn such anonymous people as John and Mary or Bilt and Jane and so forth. That's almost as bad as getting one that is sîgned ....The Smiths. I don't know about you but I know a heck of a lot of Marys and I know a lot of Smiths as well. The stigma of Ch-sma ars- s ht!f- o gett one- - fromsoebodynA l'n in for today. Would you beieve it'??M 1 got one one from Frederick and Delilah in Omaha Nebraska! -~ r - LIGHTS ON, LIONTS OFF, LIGHTS ON AGAINi Whitby «town ticouncil Monday night, reversed its prior decision and de- cided to turn the Xmas Iights back on, The Xmas lights have been turned off since cou- ncil's Iast meeting in an effort to help the energy crisis. But a report fromn the Public Utilities Com- mission stating that there is NOT a shortage of elec- tricity in Ontario, and that the town Xrnas lights only used electricity equal to about ten water heaters, and hence flot a significant amount, influenced Whit- by council into rescinding their previous decision. Dr. Hobbs, who brou- gbt the subject up the first time, again spoke for the black-out. MAN DUES Il FIRE William Deroux, 50, 32 The cause of the fire Brockwell Ave., Downs was listed as careless smok- view, died in a motel fire ing in bed. on Hwy. 12 Sunday morn. ing. The fire at the Woody- crest Motel was confined to the one unit and caused an estimated $5,000.0 darnage. A Witby jail guard, on bis way to work, not- iced srnoke and turned in the report to police who notified the fire de- partment at 7:53 a.m. gain spoke for the ligbts saying "I don't think that the amount of electricity being used on those lights is being wasted." Coun. Jim Gartshore re- read the P.U.C. statement and said that by turning the lights off "we're el- iminating one of the beau- f ity" He added "I suggest to you that we have done our bit and really saved nothing .... so let's turn the ligbts back on." A vote was taken on the motion to turn the ligbts back on and passed 8 to 1 with Dr. Hobbs being the only hold out.
