Public transportation, as we aIl know, would be the logical answer. But, can we afford a public transit system? The answer is NO. At least, flot for the time being. Although William Davis, the Ontario Premier, is constantly battling for some kind of public transit system, the idea, as 1 see it, will neyer work. Simply, because'we keep making more and 'more cars and building less and less super-highways. First, something must be done to stop ail Big Four automakers frorn producing motor vehicles which greatly contribute to the existing traffic cha'os. But, if thîs cannot be done, then we should proceed with super-highway construction programs. Toronto must be the only city in the world with its shortest expressway. The Spadina Expressway, if m-- figures are right, is only two miles in length. including the ramp exits. It is a laughing stock for everyone to see and also the biggest eye-sore 1 have seen so far. The Don Valley Parkway served its purpose, 1 say. ten years ago. Today, the two-lane expressway is sadly outdated. Every tirne 1 take the Don Valley route, it practically takes me nowhere. For hours, 1 have been sitting in the middle of the road and cursing the traffie engineers. Almost every second day 1 witness minor car collisions, flot counting the jack-knifed tractor trailers. And, 011 Fridays, you will find the road choked with cars - everyone trying to leave town at the same time. And, speaking of traffic jams, 1 must also mention the infarnous Gardiner Expressway. So, we have expressways galore, but all look like huge parking lots. It is very nice to talk about public transit - the high-speed trains, the mono-rails - you name it. But, what bas been done to alleviate the present traffic sit- uation? Nothing - that's what. However, it's not too late to start doing something. First and foremost a decision must be made: do we want to keep our cars and later on MULTIPLE S The Multiple Sdlerosis Society of Canada (Ontario Division) will hold a general meeting on Thursday, October 25, 1973 at 7:30 pmn at the Oshawa Recréation Hall, THORNTON RD., Oshawa. The purpose of this meeting is to form a chapter of the Society in Ontario County. Multiple Sclerosis is a dîsease of the central nervous systemn which may produce paralysis and loss of sensation affecting bodily functions including vision, speech, balance and movement. This year the Society is pledging more than SI 40,000 for research projects. The majority of this rnoney cornes from 34 chapters/and Ladies Associations (LAMIS). There is no known cause or cure for Multiple Sclerosis. 'he aims of the chapters/LAM in the province are to provide service to the Multiple Sclerosis patient and raise funds to support the medical research program. Without local assistance the research prograrn could flot continue at its growing pace. choke ourselves to death or should we scrap our metal elk-gods and start using buses, streetcars, railways, etc. Personally, I'd prefer to get rid of my Super-Beetle and take that bus or streetcar. But, I'm afraid, this won't be piossible in the near future. Unless the bus cornes to my door and the nearest subway station will be only half a mileaway from Alex Kaînins' residence. Should city planners fait to achieve a rapid transit system, a priority must be given to newer and better expressways. It is a shame, that with A the financial re- sources abounding, we are unable to solve our transport- ation needs. Moreover, we're gutless to take a stand - one way or another. Eventually, the almighty car will wipe us out, sooner or later. CLEROSIS Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is unique in the fact that most of the work is being done by the Multiple Scierosis patients themselves. The growth and great strides made in medical research over the past ten years can only continue with greater volunteer participation. Only by obtaining this help can the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada push ahead to "unlock the mystery of MS". WHERE YOU WILL FIND THE FASHION'S F[NEST Corn Fed POR1( LOINS 994 lb.
