PAGE 8, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1973, WHITBY FREE PRESS Whitby Knights of Columbus Ontarlio Tyke Basebal Champ"ions Before a huge crowd which jammed into Peel Park on Sunday, the Whitby Knights of Columbus Tyke basebaîl club won the Ontario Tyke "A" Championship for the second time in four years, to climax a thrilling season i which the club ran away with most of the other clubs in Eastern Ontario ranks, captured the E.O.B.A. Tyke crown and then went into O.B.A. playdowns, sweeping their first series against Thronhill in two straight games, droppmng the first game of their set with Stratford but bouncing back to take the next two games and the series. The series victory against Stratford gave the Knights a berth in the Al - Ontario final against Leamington, representing the Western part of the province. The K of C's edged Leamington 1 - 0 in a real thriller that had the crowd in the Leamington park on the edge of their seats as the contest remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Whitby scored the only run of the game. Although the Knights came out winners they didn't take the important win lightly, realizing that the Leamington club could be dangerous in the second game, and they were ready for Sunday's crucial contest. The K of C's wasted little time in taking command of the game in the 1 st inning and they were well on their way to a 17 - 2 victory and the Ontario Tyke "A" Championship. Leamington scored their second run in the 3rd inning. Once again in the 3rd and 4th innings, the K of C's LACROSSE Novice "B" Alil Ontario Championship won by Garrard Road Team: Al Season Sports. In Mississauga on Sunday, September l6th, Al Season Sports defeated Burlington 12 - 7 to win the Al - Ontario Lacrosse Novice "B" Championship. In an Exhibition game with Whitby, Al Season Sports won by a score of 9 - 3 over Garrard Road. An Exhibition game with Pee Wee "B" team, Red's Sports & Cycle against Al Season Sports ended in overtime 7 - 6 for the Pee - Wee's. Iu the Girls League play - offs, best 3 out of 5 games is tied 1 each between Dodd & Souter and Local 222. I Novice House League play - offs, best 2 out of 3 games Gaben Investments lead Brooklin Oddfellows 1 - 0. Thie first game was played at Willow Park on Wednesday night; Gaben beat Oddfellows 6 - 5 ina close decision. jumped on Leamington pitching for 7 more runs. In the 3rd, Whitby scored 4 runs as three batters drew walks and a triple was hit. The K of C's rounded out the scoring with one run in the 6th inning. The winning pitcher was Mike Welling who struck out 12 Leamington batters, also contributed 2 bits on his way to the victory. The players and coaches will be the receipients of trophies and citations from the Whitby Minor Basebal Association, the Ontario Basebaîl Association, the Town of Whitby, and the Whitby Council of the Knights of Columbus who have sponsored the club for many years. The 1970 champions were feted at a banquet which will be long remembered in the sports history of the community because the guest of lionour was Rusty Staub, one of baseball's superstars. It is probably unlikely that a guest of hîs stature could be obtained again sirîce his appearance was made possible by the Bank of Montreal who retained him under special arrangement for public relations work, but will be a fitting testimonial to Whitby's newest cham- pions at a later date. They will occupy an honoured spot at the Awards Day of the Whitby Minor Basebaîl Associat- ion to be held on Sunlday October l4th at the Heyden- shore Pavilion as one of their celebrations. Canada Year book wins WMBA Baintam Titie In' a highly successfui two day tournament, which brought down the curtain on the Whitby Minor Basebal Association Bantam season, the Canada Yearbook club pulled off some last inning heroics and captured the WMBA Bantam crown, for edging Custom House 10 - 9 in the series final. Custom House finished the regular 22 game sehedule in top spot while Canada Yearbook were in second place but a triple in the final inning with two on base brought home the titie to the Yearbook squad.
