WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1973, PAGE 9 NEWS OSHAWA ... Good driving practices to help increase gasoline mileage are set out in General Motors of Canada's 1974 vehicle owner's manuals, according to J.D. Duffy, Vice President and General Sales Manager. Mr. Duffy said GM is giving increasing attention to the efficient use of energy and passing on this information directly to their customers. "Our current Chevrolet, for example, has grown 8.7 inches in length and added 612 pounds since 1967." he said. "This added weight includes improved bumpers, emission control devices, disc brakes and new suspension systems, standardization of power steering and automatic transmission and side - guard beams. These improvements required additional weight to be added to the vehicle structure, brakes, suspension, wheels and tires. These changes, in turn, required a larger engine to maintain the same performance and emission levels." In the 1974 GM owner's manuals, there are 11 driving tips to achieve better gasoline mileage. They are: "Jackrabbit" Starts ... Gasoline can be conserved (and engine and tire life prolonged) by avoiding unneces- sarily rapid acceleration away from lights and stop signs. Stop - and - Start Driving ... Frequent stops and starts during a trip really cut down on your miles per gallon. Plan your short shopping trips to take advantage of through streets to avoid traffic lights. Pace your driving, as professional drivers do, to avoid unnecessary stops. Speed Versus Mileage ... Excessive speed on the highway raises your gas consumption drastically. You might save as much as 19 percent on your fuel bill by driving 50 mph instead of 70 mph. In a recent test conducted at a General Motors Proving Ground, four Chevrolet Impalas averaged 21,6 miles per Canadian gallon at a constant speed of 50 mph. This dropped to 18 miles per gallon at 70 mph, to 14.4 miles per gallon in suburban type driving, and to less than 12 miles per gallon in heavy city traffic. Excessive Idling ... An idling engine uses gasoline, too. If you are faced with more than a few minutes wait and you are not in traffic, it may be better to 'turn off' and start again later. Sudden Stops ... Sudden stops themselves do not waste gasoline, but energy is wasted as heat in braking. But energy in the form of gasoline is needed to accelerate up to driving speed. Lubricants ... A poorly lubricated vehicle means less friction between moving parts. Owners can consult their GM car manual and the maintenance schedule for the proper lubricants to use and the lubrication intervals. Air Cleaner ... Your car receives it's power from a mixture of gasoline and air. The air is taken into the system through the air cleaner so it is important to replace the air cleaner at required intervals. A dirty air cleaner reduces engine efficiency, requiring more gasoline per mile. Properly Tuned Engine ... Overall tuning (a check on timing, distributor points, spark plugs, emission control devices) can improve your car's gas mileage. You just cannot expect an 'out of tune' engine to give good mileage and cleaner air. You can lose up to I12 % gasoline efficiency when one spark plug in an eigbt - cylinder engine fails to fire. Spark plug performance is considered one of the most important factors in keeping vehicle mileage at the highest possible level. Excess Weight ... Fuel economy is related to the work the engine must do. The heavier the load, the more power it takes. Keep excess weight to a minimum by removing heavy personal effects or luggage from the car or trunk when they are not needed. Tire Inflation ... Under - inflation causes needless wear of the tires and wastes gasoline. It is a good idea to check tire pressure regularly. Wheel Alignment ... "Toe in" or "toe out" has the effect of dragging your front tires sideways and cau'ses premature tire wear. It takes power to carry this extra load and that takes gas from your tank. General Motors hopes to achieve significant improve- ments in fuel economy in future years, Mr. Duffy said. For example, this year, steel - belted radial tires built to GM specifications, are offered on 1974 models, and are expect- ,ed,t,0,ip ,c gas, s .nileage byup.t.o5./. .CBC - TV NETWORK NOTES When CBC's Toronto Region Public Relations distribut- es tickets to the public for in - studio audience shows, they generally allow for 'dropouts' - people who ask for tickets but don't turn up at the show. Monday night last week. was a rainy night in Toronto, but there were no 'dropouts' for the taping of the concert segment of the Ginette Reno special (for telecast Dec. 14). As a result, about 50 people had to be seated on a staircase that was part of the set. Ginette wowed them - and so did William Hutt, her special guest, who sang, danced and (in intervals during the taping) quipped Ginette and the audience. Other, non - audience segments of the special were taped in Studio 7 on Tuesday and Wednesday, involving National Ballet stars Karen Kain and Frank Augustyn, and a puppet troupe called The Frog Prince Theatre. Producer is Ray McConnell. Juliette holds the record these days for 'productivity': Juliette &. Friends, her five - a - week afternoon show, tapes three shows a day, two days a week; making six shows a week. What's more, she enjoys the pace - "Once you're 'up', it's easy to stay up and keep going," she says. The working day in the studio is from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Having started taping last July, Juliette & Friends is up to show no. 79 by the end of this week; there will be 190 in the current season. Linda Goranson, who stars with John Vernon in 'More Joy In Heaven' )CBC Drama '73, Sept. 30 and Oct. 7), will be a guest on Elwood Glover's Luncheon Date. Friday, September 28th. Ginette Reno, who, (Sept. 19) finished taping her first of two CBC - TV specials in Toronto, will be returning to this city in January for an engagement at the Royal York Hotel. The TV special (see previous item) will be telecast on the network on December 14th. Drew Crossan, producer of Elwood Glover's Luncheon Date, is in England, making plans and lining up guests for Elwood's working sessions in the U.K. Glover leavesf Toronto on September 28 and expects to be overseas for four weeks. In his absence the noonday talk show from the Four Seasons studio will be hosted by CBC's Harry Brown. The taped U.K. shows will be telecast later in the season, probably January, according to latest plans. In Crossan's absence, Janet Teska is producing LD these days - her first producing job.
