10 CENTS Vol. 3 No. 36 THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1973 ~1 -, 2 The once quiet sehool yards came Ialive Tuesday morning as students returned to sehool, some happil>', some reluctanti>' and some with exciting tales of thefr holiday experiences. Free Press Photo With the nominations for the upcoming Municipal Election openang toda>', Thursday, September 6tli and closing September I th, the WHITBY FREE PRESS has attempted to feel out tbe present Whitby Council members. as to their political intentions. The following is a report on what the FREE PRESS has learned and / or concluded from past and present observations of these Council members. MAYOR DES NEWMAN at time of writing was unavailable'for comment, but speculation is that tbere is a good chance lie wiIl run again for Mayor of the town that lie bas lieaded so weIl in the past. Mayor Newman bas encountered problems and setbacks whicb are to be expected in any undertaking of thîs magnitude, but lias certainly to be respected for the aIl out full - time effort lielias put forth wbicb can be considered, even by his critics, to be a well done job. At the present time no - one lias indicated that they will contest this position, but it's anybody's guess until nominations close on Monda>'. REEVE TOM EDWARDS b as indicated that he will be running locally in the Centre Ward where lie presently lives and ran successfully previausi>' in 1 968. "I feel confident that 1 will be able to carry out that position if elected," lie told theVREE PRESSS. Reeve Edward's BY MIKE BURGESS feels that the Centre Ward is a 'tougli ward to get elected in' and anticipates strong competition. Edwards has spent ten years on Council, the last four as Reeve, andl four years on tbe Public Scliool Board so sliould prove to be a very strong candidate for the Centre Ward. DEPUTY- REEVE JOHN GOODWIN told thue FREE PRESS that he bas decided to run regionally, because he feels tbe regional systern is just an extension of tbe county system, and waiîts to be able to carry over his experience from the count>' level to the region. He has.made "satisfactory arrangements" with bis employer to cope with whatever time is necessar>' to meet luis obligation at the regional level. Mr. Goodwin was raised in Brooklin and bas spent ail of bis nuarried life either in the town or in the township, and bias held office since 1958 either on Council or Township Council except- ing '65 and '66 wluen he was on the Township Area School Board, and '67 wlien lie wasn't politicailly active. COUNCILLOR ART DESJARDINE was unfortunatel>' out of town at time of writing, but it is the writer's opinion that Mr. Desjardine is likel>' seeking to curtail bis bus>' scbedule sornewbiat and probably Will not seek re - election. ,. COUNCILLOR GERRY EMM in a recent interview witb the FREE PRESS indicated that lie would be letting bis name stand regionally because lie feels'that is where tbe real action is going to be. Counilor Emm sbowing bis sincere interest for the people of the area feels tbat lie cauu accomplisb more regionally for the people than at'the local level. Self - employed, Mr. Emm delivers eggs tliroughout the region and hence bas a first band, tborough knowledge of tbe whole region including wbat is going on 'in Oshawa. His personal daily contact with the people and their problems puts him ini the unique position of actuall>' being in constant toucli witb the people of our area. Mr. Emm honestly states tbat because of tbis personal contact, be will be in a positionl to make sure (if felected) that Oshawa won't duplicate anytbîng they bave that Whitby doesn't have. Councillor Gerry Emm bas served two successful termis (4 years) on Whitby Council, and is prepared to work full - time if elected to the region. Mr. Emm should prove to be a strong contender because of bis sincere conceru for the welfare of tbe people. COUNCILLOR JIM GARTSHORE despite being ap- rolidby a nurnber of people, doesïit feel thiat lie can spend the time necessary to hiandle a regionial posîtion which lie feels is a full tirne job. HIe feels thit lie lias just got bis feet wet locally and- now ,tlat lie bias leaned CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 CIRCLE TAXI 128 BROCK ST. N. WHITBY, ONT. 24 HRS.
