WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 1973, PAGE 7 BROOKLIN-WHiTBY HOCKEY CLINIC 9 SPORTS BASEBALL For a lot of young Whitby ballplayers it's going to be a long winter, as four out of Whitby's five baseball clubs in Eastern Ontario Baseball Association play have been knocked out of contention in the early rounds. The K of C Tykes who have been Whitby's most consistent winner over the years, remain as the only culrstil battling it out for 73 Diamond hom club still battling it out for '73 Diamond Honours, hooked up with Cobourg, having won the opener of the best of three finals for the E.O.B.A. Tyke "A" title 24 - 0. The game was strictly 'no contest' as the K of C club completely dominated the play, scoring three runs in the first, six in the second and a whopping nine runs in the third for an 18 - 0 lead at the half - way point. Mike Welling and Ricky Dunphy shared the pitching chores for the Whitby club with Welling who started and hurled the first five innings. The winner, John Wall, led the hitting parade with a pair of singles and a double, Joe Doucet and Grant Leitch matched efforts with a double and single each, Dennis Fulton had a double, Murray McCorkell a triple, Mike Welling a double and Mark Underwood, Kevin Jimmo (Free Press paperboy) and Rick Dunphy singles. Cobourg had three hits and failed to push a run across as the K of Cs came up with some fine defensive plays. The Canadian Tire Midgets bowed out of the '73 season dropping the finals for E.O.B.A. Midget "A" honours two straight, 9 - 3 and 6 - 2. In the series opener played at Donegan Park in Cobourg, the Whitby club were held to three runs, ail in the third inning. while Cobourg got on the board with a pair in the first and second, single runs in the third and fourth and three in the fifth. Armand Robitaille came through with a pair of doubles, Mike Rowley a pair of singles, Terry Harper a triple, John Turner a double and Dave Parish a single. In the second gaine of the set, played at E. A. Fairman, the Canadian Tire club was knocked out of contention, but put up a good fight, losing 6 - 2. Paul Bevan on the mound for Cobourg was the stumbling bo- block again as he held Whitby to four hits, a double and a single by John Turner, and singles to Steve Sarginson and Armand Robitaille. The game saw only three errors as both clubs came up with some fine defensive plays. The Canadian Tire club followed the Lasco Steelers in being eliminated by Cobourg. The long standing rivalry between the two towns may be at an end however, as Whitby's population increase will put Whitby in a higher classification in the future. The two towns will still engage in seasonal play, but go separate ways in playoffs. The season came to an end for the Whitby Reds in Junior competition when the Keene Expos spoiled their bid to take E.O.B.A. Junior "A". honours by edging the Reds in two tight games, 3 - 2 and 3 - 1. In the series opener, played at E. A. Fairman park the Reds were out in front 2 - O at the end of the seven innings, but lost their lead, fought back and the final out of the game was made at home place and would have pulled the Reds back into a tie. Dave Ross was on the mound for the Reds and came up with a standout pitchuing EASTERN REGIONAL SWIM MEET Ajax Recreation Depart- ment wislhes to announce the hosting of the Eastern Reg- ional Swim Meet. This is the first time that Ajax lias hosted such a meet. Clubs from the surrounding areas will be competing for the various awards. Warm - ups start at 9:00 a.m. August 25th, 1973. REPORT chore, holding Keene to five hits. The Reds outhit the visitors 9 - 5 and committed only two errors to four for the Expos but the Keene club was on top in the run column where it counts. The second game of the best of three set was played in Keene and turned out to be another close one with the Reds losing 3 - I and bowing out of further play for 1973. Harold Moore got the pitching assignment for the deciding gane and responded with a fine effort, but Keene were not to be denied and came out winners. In the opening game Dave Ross with three singles and Harold Moore with a pair of safities were the leaders for the Reds at the plate, while in the second Harry Long led the way with a pair of singles. Long's play in the second game was surprising because he was knocked out of action in the game the day before, taken to hospital for observation by ambulance, and shook off his bruises to play in the crucial game in Keene. When the Legionaire Pee - Wee club handed Ajax a 17 - 3 drubbing in the opener of their best of three semi - final round, it looked as if it would be a quick series with Whitby a winner by a wide margin. When the scene shifted to Cedar Park in Ajax for the second contest and Ajax posted a 5 - 3 win to even things up, the series took on a different complexion. When the third gaine was over and the Legionaires had been knocked out of contention coming out on the short end of a 6 - 4 count the old adage was once again proven right, "the gaies not over until the last ins out," and in sport anything can happen, the favourite doesn't always cone home in front. Steve Trunteaw, who pitclhed ail three games for Ajax had to be the series hero, coming up with fourteen strikeouts in the final and yielding four hits, a double to Fred Petryshyn, and singles to Mark MacDonald, Dave Cane and John Buisman. Offensively, the Legionaires didn't get the hits out of the players expected to produce, and although Ajax rnanaged only to collect three hits they were given seven free passes, and in most cases a walk is as good asa lhit. And so, what had been a steady stream of baseball since mid - May has suddenly dried up to a trickle. For some time there has been divided opinion in E.O.B.A. circles as to the best method of determining the Eastern Ontario representatives who proceed into provincial com- petition at the O.B.A. level. At present the E.O.B.A. conducts playoff series which must be completed by August 20th, to determine Eastern Ontario winners. The glaring weakness of this plan is that for ail but the winner who goes on into O.B.A. the season is over, often in the first week of August. On more than one occasion the suggestion has been made that the leader at the end of the regular season be the Eastern Ontario representat- ive, with the regular schedule going right up to August 20, followed by playoffs involving the other clubs. In some other sports the seasons have been extended and stretched out until there is a ridiculous overlap, but baseball should take a leaf out of the book of some of the other groups and set up schedules that don't mean that the season bas corne to an end in mid - August when there is still a lot of fine weather left. r b Brooklin - Whitby Minor Hockey Association will be holding a hockey clinic this year under Jim DeMille for 5 Saturdays starting Sept. 1 to Oct. 6, price per boy is $1.50 per one hour sessions.
