REPORT The Escapees - sentenced to Penitentiary "Robbery with violence is the worst charge. It just seems to me you two young men have gone out of control," said Pro-- vincial Court Judge H. W. Jermyn as he sertenced Steven O. Faust, 20, married with one child, and Mitchell G. McArthur,21, both of London, Ontario tf0 three years consecutive to any sentence now serving on the robbery with violence charge. The young men pleaded guilty to the charges of robberv with violence, escapîng custody and six charges of thef t and six charges of break, enter and thef t when they appeared in the Whtby court handcuffed to each other and a police officer on August 7th for trial and sentence. Young Faust and McArthur wvere being transfered from Sdbury to the Kingston Penitentiary on July 10ih where they are sentenced to a six year term when they escaped from the Sherrif's men, at Thickson Road and Highway 401 interchange, Whtby. The youths had found a safety pin in the back seat of the car driven by Armond Lamereux, Deputy Sherrif of the Sudbury District. The pin was used to unlock the handcuffs and the leg irons. Faust struck Armond on the head with handcuffed hands, and Mcrthur pushed Laurie Lamereux out of the car, at the interchange. While eastbound on Highway 401 Faust pushed Armond' Lamereux out of the car. They took over then drove the car.eastward. Mr. Lamereux received multiple cuts to his head and face and the ring finger on his right hand was broken as he protected his head f rom the blows, Crown Attorney Bruce Af fleck told the Court. The stolen vehicle was recovered in Oshawa. On July 1Oth, Mrs. A.J. Cameron of East Whtby Township heard a car and a strange noise. She went to her kitchen to investigate. There she saw a man standing in front of her refrigerator. He took a quart of milk from the refrigerator and ran out. The sound of a car speeding off was heard. Among the charges of break and enter was in Woodstock on May 19th, where they chopped a hole in the roof of a building using an axe. Gaining entry into the building through the crawl space, they went into the office area and attempted to open the safe*with the axe. They managed to knock off the knob but could not open the saf e. The youths then went on a rampage using axe and a sledge hammer to knock groceries and merchandise off the shelves. There was $1000 damnag- es and loss of merchandise. The charges ranged ail over the southern portion of Ontario] and part of northern Ontario and included the mischief charge. This was July l4th in Owen Sound where Faust's parents live. There was a 1973 vehicle taken from in front of the owner's home and driven through a fence into a swamp. The car could be called a total wrte - off when it was located in the swamp. It cost $50 to bring if out of the swamp and the damages were estimated at $2,200. On July 13th a 1972 Austin was stolen fron London Ontario and recovered in Owen Sound a f ew blocks from the accused Faust's parents home. The front wheel of this car was damaged. Other damages were done to a cash register which had been carried out of a service station in Wasaga Beach on May 4th. It contained $3 but the two were unable to open the cash register. In their efforst they, did $1200 damage. The cash register and the $3 were recovered f rom the fielId.
