Cadbu ry Schweppes Powell Limited, the Canadian subsidiary of the world's largest chocolate and cocoa manufacturer, announced today it will establish a $10,000,000. plant here to serve Canada's major growth area. The plant will provide about 175 new jobs. Construction is to begin immediately, with completion scheduled for late summer next year. Clifford B. Powell, chairman and chief executive officer of Cadbury Schweppes Powell,' whose head office is in Montreal, said Whitby was selected as the site of the company's new Ontario plant in view of the potential for expansion and its proximity to Toronto. -A 40 acre emplacement has been acquired on the spur of the Canadian Pacific railroad lîne. 1It allows for unlimited expansion for the plant northward and westward and limited expansion towards the south and east. Mr. Powell announced details of the new plant at a press conference attended by Mayor Desrnond G. Newman and Industrial Commissioner W.G. Winters, of Whitby. Mayor Newman said the Cadbury decision is "an expression of great confidence in the future of our area as well as recognition that Whitby is an appropriate location for penetration into the Greater Toronto market. "It bas been our basic strategy to encourage a diversified industrial basis in the community and the addition of Cadbury Schweppes Powell Limited to the list of inter- national companies in Whitby is very welcome indeed." The plant will cover an area of 100,000 square feet and will accent modemn food production techniques. The building is to be a one - story structure of poured concrete with brick and precast finish. Architects are Reich, Scbertzer and Scoler, of Montreal, and thIe engineers, Surveyer, Nenniger and Chenevert lnc., also of Montreal. W. Roger Gravelle, of Cadbury is the project manager. Mr. Powell said chocolate for the Whitby plant will be processed in Cadbury's Montreal plant, which itself is to undergo a $5 ,000,000 redevelopment programn aimed at achieving optimum manufacturing potential.
