WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAY, JULY 5, 1973, PAGE 9 SPORTS REPORT Whitby Minor Basebali in Eastern Ontario Association play, the, Legionaire Pee - Wees remain as Whitby's lone undefeated club. The K of C tykes has shared the distinction until their victory string was snapped after ten straiglit wins by the Oshawa Legionaîres in a tiglit 4 - 3 gaine at Oshawa's Kinsmnen Stadium in the first haîf of an 'Oshawa - Whitby' double - header where the Lasco Steelers were also edged by one run ini the 10 - 9 nlight - cap. The K of C's went into a 2 - 1 lead iin the third inning but it was short lived as the Legionaires went in front 3 - 2 ini the fourth anid neyer gave up their lead. Dunphy started on the înound for the K of C's and gave way to Welling ini relief. Welling came up with a double while the other Whitby hitters were Wall, Doucet, Jimmo and Underwood. Thle defeat followed on the heels of the only other loss in the season for the club when Waterloo defeated Whitby 6 - 1 in the final gaine of the Kinsmen Club of Guelph Tournament. Playing against somne of Ontario's best, the Whitby club came through with a 10 - 1 triumph over Guelph in their opening gaine of the event, they downed Stratford 7 - 5, and Scarborough Village 7 - 4 to win a berth in the Champîonship final. The first three gaines were highlighted by the pitching of Mike Welling, with the young left - bander appearing in aIl three gaines of the opening day and notching three victories. In the opener against Guelphi, McCorkell and Wall had home runs to lead the Whitby hitters. Against Stratford the only extra base blow for the K of C's was a triple by Mark Underwood, who also led at the plate against Scarborough. Thle Championship Final was held on Sunday and a disastrous first inning spelled defeat for Whitby as they gave up four unearned runs and were neyer able to get back on track for the rest of the gaine bowing out 6 - 1. In the final, Doucet, Underwood and Parrott got hits for Whitby. In spite of- the dis- appointrnent of going so far in the tourney only to lose in the final gaine, officiaIs were pleased with the club's performance as they were playing against top riotch conipetition and fared amazingly well. In the second haîf of the twin bill at Kinsuien Stadiuin the Lasco Steelers were edged 10 - 9 by the Oshawa Legiona ire Bantains. '[le Steelers came up with a big five run third inning which gave thein a 6 - 1 Iead but Oshawa nibbled away shortening the margin finally going ahead in the seventh. When the Steelers rallied in the ninth with a pair to'corne within a run of the Legionaîres it Iooked as if the garne inight go into extra innings but the Legionaires hung on. O'Donnell was on the mound for the Steelers yielding ten hits. For the Steelers who got Il hits off the Oshawa combination of Ashton, Maddick, Murkar, Perry, Keboe and Thutton each h- as a pair while O'Donnell, Shearer and McWhirter added singles. Most exciting moinent in the gaine was in Garrard Rd. Lacrosse Ilu a game played this past week in Tyke House League Owen Bros. beat Witby PUC 9 - 3, with Oliver scoring 7 goals, Peebles 2. Ellis had 5 goals to win for his teai Fantasyland Park over Ajax 5 - 3. Ajax goals by Dick 2 Mac Donald 1, and 1 assist for Macdonald. In another gaine Ajax won over Dear- born Shieil 12 - 6. Gaben scorers Lynde and Giddings. In the girls Lacrosse this week Local 222 beat Ajax 7 - 0. 4 goals for Marg Fraser, 2 for Julie Healsip and 1 by Lorrie Mclntrye. Dodd & Souter beat Local 222 5 - 1.
