General employ- ment conditions have been improving over the past few months and the numbers of new registrants with'our offices have dropped off. This corr esponds with a general drop in local welfare roles and the numbers of persons registering for unemployment insurance benefits. Vacancies registered with our offices during May were more numerous especially in the service industry and the wholesale and retail sales industries. Most restaurants, hotels and recreational concerns are now gearing up for the summer tourist season. Home owners, as welI are preparing for the summer season and are actively seeking housekeepers and babysitters. The personal service trades are also increasing in demand with shortages of barbers and hairdressers noted. Student employment has been very active and wel above that of last year. By the end of May most available students had been placed in employment,. Short- ages of suitable jobs for femnale students, however have existed, and some students have had to take low paying babysitting jobs. Prospects are bright for the large numbers of higb sehool students who will be available in June. The seccess of this year's student program is attributed partly to the excellent support of the media in the Oshawa area and the encouraging response from local employers. A strong demand for skilled tradesmen has continued into May as well a recurring shortage of tradesmen in several trades. The construction industry has urgent needs for skilled bricklayers, carpenters, cement finishers, painters, electricians and heavy equipment operators for backhoes and tandem dump trucks. Similarly, in the manufacturing trades, shortages stili exist for tool and die makers, machinists, welders, sheet metal workers and industrial maintenance personnel. These shortages are not limited to the local area as attempts to recruit workers across Ontario have not been successful. Executive, professional and technical listings during May decined somewhat but demand 's for registered nurses and nursing assistants have remained. Shortages of engineering and drafting personnel in various fields have existed as well as some other technical construction personnel. Registrations of workers in the sector have been numer- - ous during May and have included many recent community - college and university graduates. Many of these graduates have had training in Social Sciences and Urban Renewal and opportunities for them have been limited in this area. Clerical listings have been steady during May with niany excellent positions available. The demand continues for experienced and well qualified secretaries and stenos with only limited opportunities for clerk typists and general office clerks.
