WHITBY ROTARY CLUB CELEBRATES 40 YEARS 0F SERVICE by Neil Murkor Ibis Month marks the fortieth year of service te the communit>' by the Ro- tary Club of Whitby. On May 2nd, 1933 Whitby's ffrst service club received its charter as a member club of Rotary Internation- ai, an organization whose symbol, the cog wheeh, is one of the most familiar and respected in the world. Today, three-quarters of a million men ini over 15,000 Rotary' clubs meet in 149 nations of the free world. The Rotary Club of Wlii- tby was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Oshawa with the assistance of the Rotary' Clubs of Bowman- ville and Toronto, and re- ceived its Charter at a mee- ting held at the Ontario Ladies College. [lie Presi- dent of the Oshiawa club, the Lite Dr. Grant L. Bird, presided at the function attended by over 200 Ro- tarians from other Ontario centres and the Charter was presented by Mr. PhlI MVosher of Niagara Falls N.Y., the Governor of Ro- tary International District No. 27. District 27 was a truly international Dis- trict embracing part of southern Ontario and up- per New York state. In the past forty years there has been a phenomenal growth in the number of clubs, the boundaries have changed man>' times and Witby is now in District 707. Charter members of the club were: A. Allun, G. Astley, A. Archibald, Dr. B. Beaton, Rev. T. best, E. Bowman, A.G. Browning, Dr. C. Carscal- len, G. Goodfellow, D. Holliday, J. Keirnan, Dr. G. MacDouphll, Dr. S. Montgomery, J. Perry, J. Roblin, D. Ruddy, Dr. G. Stevenson, and D. Wilson. 0f the original eigliteen members, six survive: Dr. Beaton, Mr. Archibald, Mr. Holliday, Col. Perry, Mr. Roblin and Mr. Wilson, the latter two are still members of the club,.lThe Charter Members were honored at the 4Oth Aniti- versary celebration held last week at the Heyden- shore Pavilion. First Pres. of the club was Dr. Geo. Stevenson, the Superinten- dant of the Ontario Hos- pital, now the Whitby Psy- chiatric Hospital. In 1941 the club acted as sponsors of the Rotary Club of Pic- kering. During the past forty years the club lias been meeting ever>' Tues. at 12:15 p.m. at the Whitby House, The Royal Hotel, the clubhouse of the old Wbitby Yacht Club, the Whiitby Communit>' Arena and the Whitby Curling Club where the present membership of 68 current- ly meets. As reported elsewhere in this issue, the Opera- tions Committee hast week moved to recommend that a contract for the construction of the Iro- quois Park Arena be a- warded to Newtown Con- struction of Downsview. Ilie Comimittee also re- cominended the inclusion of the banquet hall at an added cost of sorne S25,000, Both items, of course, subject to Town Council approval. The fireworks started whien a letter was intro- duced from Mr, Wrn. Fair- service, president of the Building and Construc- tion Trades Council (Osh- awa and District), reque- sted a meeting witlî Town Council before the ten- der contract was awarded as he anticipates "num- erous labour probhems" with Newtown. A motion was then made at this spectal Coun- cil Meeting to accept the recommendation made to Council b>' theO0perations Committee. The discus- sions, some frantic, some furjous got under way. There were even Council- lors who were honest e- nough te, admit that they didn't understand the un- dercurrents and innuendos being passed around in the 'discussions'. Coun.
