Brooklin in TheNews The Brooklin Horticullural Society held its regular monthly meeting on Wednes. day, April 25th with 41 meni- bers and friends present. There were 40 entries placed in the Daffodil Flower Show. Mr. Frank Samis of Bow- manville was the guest speaker and gave an illustrated talk on Gladioli. 35TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR A BUSY ONE May will be an extremely busy nonth for the members of the Brooklin Horticultural Society who are celebrating their 35th anniversary in May of this year. Many important events are planned for May, and The Town of Whitby has declared the week of May 20-26th as Horticultural Week in the Town of Whitby. On May l9th a tea and bake sale will take place froni 2 til 5 in Grasser's Park in Brooklin, a park which bas been maintained and planted by the Societies' members for many years. Visitors will be able to view the beauty cre- ated by the Horticultural Plantings of daffodils, tulips and narcissus, which are ex- pected to be at their best for the occasion. At the same time in the church hall near- by, a spring flower show will be underway. Entries will be received between one and two p.m. on Saturday. The organization will also have a large variety of box plants for sale to the public. Proceeds from the tea and sale will be used to further the work of beautifying the Town of Whitby and sur- rounding area through civic planting projects. Plantings undertaken by the society include Brooklin Legion Hall, Brooklin Library, a main street site near Harris Bake Siop, the large garden at the Brooklin Memorial Arena arjd extensive plantings in fro' t of the Centennial Building n Whitby. Plans are also beii g made to add some colour to the entrance to the Ashburn Cominunity Centre ground s. On May 23rd our regular meeting will be held in the Christian E d uca t i o n Hall, Brooklin United Church at 8 o'clock in the evening. The guest speaker will be Mrs. Earle Sandford of Oshawa who will be speaking on "G r o o m ing Roses for the Show". A charter will be presented to our president Gordon Wick by a representative of the Ontario Horticultural Asso- ciation. This occasion marks 35 years of active service in our community, but the so- ciety dates fron 1921 with a period of inactivity during the war years. Mrs. Audrey Young will convene the meet- ing. This will be a memorable occasion and we will be ex- pecting a good attendance at this meeting. Box plants will be available after the meeting as well as on Friday May 18th, Satur- day May 19th, Monday May 21st and Saturday, May 26th -weather permitting. A membership drive is now underway and complimentary events programs have been circulated to all Brooklin resi- dents by mail. It intends to charge the whole of the cost of the work as a sewer rate for a period of 15 years upon lands that will or may derive a benefit.herefrom described in Schedule "B".
