Because of the thick fog, there almiost wasn't a race, but after a one hour and seventeen mninute delay, the race got under way anyway. The pole position was hield by Peter Revson in a Yardley McLaren with the fastcst qulalifyinig timie of one miinute. thirteen point six seconds andi a speeci of 120.279 mph. Also on thie front- row were Denis Hlulmie (Y'ardley McLaren) who turned a 1: 13:9, and Ronnie Petersen (STP March) with a 1: 14:0. On the second row were Emerson Fittipaldi (JPS Lotus) and Jackie Stewart (Tyreil Ford) who both qualified with a 1: 14.4. The total grid consisted of twenty-four cars after Derek Bell of England (Nô. 3 1) in the Tecno flat 1 2 spun out and hit the guard rail in practice.. ... .half an hour after the race was originally sche- duled to start. Skip Barber, in a March 71I1, stopped at tum one of the first lap. Meanwhile, Peterson had taken the lead, followed by Stewart, Revson, Jackie Ickx, and Fittipaldi. In the third lap Revson and Ickx changed places, with Ickx in front. In the fourth lap, Stewart passed Peterson. So it was Jackie Stewart, Peterson, Ickx, and Revson. It wasn't long before Niki Lauda in the STP Ford pulled off between three and four, followed by Wilson Fittipaldi (Emerson's older brother) in a Brabham BT341 1 with gearbox failure. On lap ten, Jackie Stewart 'put his foot into it' and turned a time of*one minute, six teen point seven seconds and a speed of 115.418 mph for a new Formula 1 Iap record. At the end of twenty laps, it was still Stew- art, Peterson, Revson, Fittipaldi (Emerson), and The winning car ...an EIf Tyreli powered by a Cosworth-Ford engine. On the twenty-second lap, Jean-Pierre Bel-' toise (BRMI160) who had been running 14th, lunched his engine and retired. After 30 laps, Stewart, Peterson, Revson, Fittipaldi, and Clay Regazzoni (Ferrari) were the top five. Ten laps later, the first five places were un- changed. But thien Peterson rnixed it up with Graham Hill (Brabhamn BT 37) on turn ten and stopped. Being just at the exit of thepits, Peter- son 's crew pushed his car back into the pits for repairs. Entering the pits the wrong way is an in- fraction of the regulations. and Ronnie Peterson was later disqualified. A bad break. Soon Emerson Fittîpaldi was into the pits with a broken front wing and Francois Cevert (Tyrel Ford) was out with a broken fourth gear. As the lap 60 marker camne out, Jackie Stew- art was holding down an easy first place, followed by Revson, Regazzoni -Carlos Reutemann (Brab- ham BT 37) and Denis Hulme. Ten laps later these positions remnained the sarne. And when the cliequered flag camne down on thie 8Oth I ap, Stew- art was first across the line and with Revson 50 seconds behiind, and then Hulme, Reutemiann, and Regazzoni. The thirty-three year old 'Mod Scot' (Jackie Stewart took home a S 25,000 purse for his win pilus lap money, plus...well. hie did alrighit! iackie, whio presently lives in Switzerland with his wife Helen. and two sons. Mark and Paul, lias driven TyrelI cars since 1 964. This Grand Prix victory gives imi a total of 2- 1 and puts himi third on the alI-time list behiind iim Cliurke (25) and Juan Manuel Fangio (24).
