STUDY GROUP MEETING TO BE OPEN. TO THE PUBLIC The Whitby Citi- zens Study Group has called a spe- cial public meeting to be held Monday, September 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sir John A. Mac- d on al1 d Theatre, Whitby Centennial Building. The planned gather ing, de- scribed by group p res i d en t Jim Gartshore as an orientation meet- ing, is being held primarily to have the guidel ines and goals of the group outlined to the general public. Th e September 11 meeting pre- ceeds the Ontario Municipal 3 o a r d Hear i ng on the contentious muni- cipal - police buildings issue on September 13, so discussion of strategy at the hearing will also be outlined. The study group, whose members formed t h i s year to familiarize themselves w i th municipal events, oppose the Ross- land Road munici- palbuil ding be- cause of impending Regional Govern- ment implementa- tion, because - the location is so far removed from the present town cen- tre; for the de- claredcost, which while approaching a million dollars does not include the cos t of the land or i t s servicing; increase in the mill rate and be- cause the "prema- ture d e p a r t u r e f r o m the present site is a moral breach of the ac- ceptance of the late A.H. Allin's bequest. T w mai i - rn Av Aauoumi 1-y1972 vol a VO P40 - w - -- REE HOME DELIVEJW e W!hitby - A plan, the formulators of which do not vvish names or details re- leased at this time, could bring the most modern recreational - sports facilities available - to Whitby. \WJhitby Pecreation Facilities incor- porated has been meeting over the past three weeks, and at a meeting held Mon- day afternoon attended by the .'hitby Free Press, the group decided upon a public announcement through the media slated for this evening. Their project encompasses a three or four phase cons t ru c tion period. Phase 1 would deal with construction of an arena which would be ready for use for the winter of 173. Later phases call for construction of an indoor swim- ming pool and possible tennis courts; a physical training centre and a possible auditorium depending on collective pri- ority wishes of the people of Whitby. The most pronounced aspect of con- struction plans is that the project (a) wouldconstructfacilities(arena, swim- ming pool etc.) at one site easily ac- cessible to all the town's people, and (b)would be totally built, endorsed and supported by the people of Whitby. The project would be similar to Aydelu Incorporated, t'he 1972 Arena Building Campaign undertaken by the communities of Aylmer, Deschenes and Lucerne in Quebec. According to i ts formula tor s the pro- posai will not be deterred by separate p I a n s by any group to erect an arena or c on s truct a swimming pool aiready afoot, as it is their firm belief that the facilities needed in the town would be better placed under one roof. The proposed sports recreati on cen- tre is not the Iroquois Park project and is not being promoted by any one poli- tician or political group. Nor has the recent plan been formul ated by the special arena committee. The project will be spearheaded by a w e I I known and respected group of W'Jhi tby ci tizens who have joined together with one aim in mind: to supply the people of W!hitby with a top calibre sports-rec- reation centre based on a proven formula.
