WHITEY FREE PRESS, Thursday, August 10, 1972, page 9 Whitby Teams Enjoy Successful Weekend If the baseball action in the dying days ofthe 1972 regular season schedule for Whitby clubs playing in the Eastern On- tario Oaseball Assoc. is an indication of things to come, area baseball fans are in for some exciting baseball in the days ahead as playoffs get underway. Log I o nal res The Legionaires in the E. O. E. A. Pee-Wee series finished a tremendous season on a triumphant note by handing their old adversaries the Cobourg Pi- r a t e s a convincing 13-2 trouncing at Peel Park and clinched first place in the E.O.S.A. Pee-Wee division. The Canadian TireMidget club who has also been playing outstanding baseball nipped Port Hope 7-6 in a real thriller to take the top spot in their group. The K of C tyke cl ub and the Lasco Steeler ban tams are awaiting word from their convenors as to the final standings in their groups but its agood bet that they're not far off the pace. The Legionaires added two more wins to their impressive season record which was22wins against 2 losses, including tournament play. Their first game of the week came against the S owmanville Le- gion squad at Bowmanville's Memorial Park and the Whitby club came out on top 6-4 but not before they had to come from behind a 4-0 deficit. Cem Murkar Cam Murkarstruck out nine and gave up only three hits to pick up the win. John Heffer with a double and a single ledtheclubat the plate white other hits went to Tim Twining and Paul D-rown w i th doubles and Doug Shearer who picked up a single. On Thursday the Co- bourg P i r a t e s came to Peel Park for t h e i r final appearance of the regul ar schedule and the Legionaires hung a 13-2 trouncing on the easterners, com- ing up with the winning combination of hard hitting, sharp fielding, and fine pitching. The Legionaire bats came to Iifefor this crucial gamewithfirst place at stake and Whitby had run up an 8-0 lead by the end of the second inning. John Heffer with a pair of singles, Doug Shearer with a triple that played ' big part in the early lead, a timely double by Tim Twining led the way for the Le- gionaires while Dave McWhir ter, Rick Kay, Greg Tushingham, EDlair Gibson, Fred Petryshyn, Cam Murkar and Ian Gillis were the other hitters who man- aged to add to the eleven hit attack off 4 Cobour g hurie r s. Starter Jim O'Rourke was charged with the loss. Cam Murkar on the mound for Whitby was in charge ail the way, giving up three hits, walking only one, and s trik- ing out n i n e and had a shutout going which was los ton an over throw at third base which allowed Cobourg their two runs, unearned. The defensive highlight of the game for W/-hitby belonged to lan Gillis who made a fine running catch on a short bloop hit just over third base. The Whitby club was behind 6-1 at the end of the second, but displaying the kindof form that's needed to come from behind they closed the door on the op- pos ition and Harol d Moore, on the mound for Whi tby shut them out for the remain- der of the game. In the ninth inning with the game tied Robbie Craigen drove in .what proved to be the winning run. Har- ol d Moore on the mound for the Canadian Tire club got off to a shaky start but from the second inning on was unbeatable and his mates fought back with John Turner having a big night at the plate withthreesingles, Craig Bronishewski added a pair of singles, Bob Craigen a t i m e I y single to drive in the winner, w h il1 e Harold Moore had a triple and single to help his own cause. Kevin Jig- gins took the loss. The final victory gave the Canadian Tire club a 15-7 record for the season, and the club lost only two games in their lastfifteenwhich included t h e i r outstanding performance in the Oshawa-Whi tby Mi dg e t tournament in which they-fought their way to the finals a gain s t some of the finest clubs in Ontario. Attersley Tire The A t t e r s 1îe y Tire Juniors made their contribution to the County Town Carnival a 6-1 win over the Newcastle Lions in a game at E. A. Fairman in which things were tied up 1-1 until the bottom of the 7th when the Attersleys had one run come in and then came up with a big four run eighth to go out in front 6-1. Greg Cairns came up with a fine pitchingchore for W.'Jhitby. In which he had sharp contro and took charge getting himself out of a couple of jams with some smart pitching in which he moved the ball weIl to come up with strikeouts at crucial times. In picking up the victory he had eleven strikeouts, gave up only three hits and was ahead of the b a t t e r s most of the afternoon. G e o r ge Yates who had a good day at second base, led the club with three singles, whileDougNWarlow had a pair, and R-an dy Sorochan, W ilson Trail, H a r r y Long and Russ Sorichetti had sing les. Las o StSI eler s T he L asco Steeler s finished thei r schedule in high style with a 7-3 victory over Lindsay who they met in the first plIay off r oun d. In their final game, played in Lindsay Dave Moore who has b ee n giving the Steelers superlative pitching had 23 strikeouts and gave up only three hits. On Sunday at E. A. Fairman the Steelers met Lindsay in the first game of the sem i-finals and came out on topl13-4 in a game that was really never in doubt. Lindsay enjoyed a short- lived2-0 lead in the top of the first but from there on it was the Steeler's game. Dave Allen was on the mound again and andcame through with another standout performance striking out 18 and yiel ding 4 hits. At the same time his mates col- lected 13 hits with Mike Rowley leading thew,ay with a double and a single, while Steve Thwaites, Dave Wall, Dave Allen, Kevin Roche, Tim Brown each picked a pair of singles and George Hicks added a single. The Steeler had a big seven run third inning which put the game out of reach of Lindsay who couldn't get to Dave Allen on the mound. K. of C ' The K of C tykes gave an indication of things to come when they whi tewashed Cowmanville 11-0 in their final league meeting behind the one hit pitching of MikevWelling who struck out ten for the win. Butch Gailley with ahome-run, Mike Well1Iing with a triple and single and Ken Jimmo and John Wall with a pair of sin- gles each were the hitters. The K of C club met Bowmanville in the first game of the E.O.3.A. semi-finals atP eel Park and the outcome 21-3 victory for the Whitby club. Larry Chizen got the win with a four hit chore which he had ten strikeouts. Kevin McClelland who hasregainedhis hitting eye at the right time had three singles, Butch Galley who has been hitting for extra bases had a triple and a double, Robbie Scero had a double and a single, Gary Shearer had two singles, while Larry Chizen, Paul Heffer, and Mike 'Jelling each had sin- gles.
