Recent films like the Honkers, J. W. Coop, and Junior Bonner seem to indicate a trendin which the easy rider of the open road is being supplanted by the hard rider of the rodeo circuit. For the real story of the rodeo rid- e r , however, we in Canada need look no further than our own West and home- grown champions I ike Kenny McLean. Kenny , a top r ider from Okanagan Falls, British Columbia, is the genuine article. He's been in the game since h i s teens and. at 23 became a world champion saddle broncri6er'. Th -t vva; a d e c a d e ago, and in the years s ince he's added t o his fame with a lot more rides: he holds five saddle-bronc and three all-round cowboy championships. Kenny 's story i s told in a one-hour col ou r feature from th e NFB called HardRider, tobe telecast on the CBC- TV networkVednesdny, July 19 at 10:00 p. m. Filmed in the U. S. and Canada - including the Calgary Stampede, scene of Kenny's first major triumph in 1959 - Hard Rider shows how the rodeo circuit is a way of I ife for this young Canadian Indian. lt's the story of a modern rodeo f a m i Iy a s they tour the stampedes on both sides of the border and it offers a fresh I ook at the rough and tumble life of the men who carry on the traditions of the range rider of the Old West. Josef Reeve, who wrote and directed Hard Rider, says that the rodeos not oni y provide a living for some, and entertainment for the crowds, they also helpkeep alive the skills of the cowboy and save some horses and cattle from the dog food factories. Kenny McLe an, one of the all-timegreats rides Bar Belle at Cal gary, in a scene from the NFB production "Hard Rider" to be seen on CBC-TV Wednesday, July 19 at 10p. m.
