WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, July 6, 1972, page 13 LEGIONAIRES BREAK WINNING STREAK The Whitby K of C cl.ub journeyed to Cobourg for their first game of the season at Donegan Park and came home with an 8-5 victory. Larry Chizen who pitched f i v e -hit baseball through five innings picked up the victory wi th some rel ief help from Robbie Scero. AI though they fai led to hit the 'long balls' his mates picked up eight hits on their way to the win with Steve Parrott leading the w ay w ith a double and a single. Paul Heffer, John Wal1, Larry Chizen, Robbie Scero, Gary Shearer and Kevin MacLellandcame through with singles. The K of C club is in Port Hope this w e e k end for a double header on Sat- urdayas they make up a previous rain- o u t . They return home f o r a game at Peel Park on Wednesday, July 12 against C o b ou rg. Lindsay's w ithdrawal from E. O.B.A. Tyke competi tion has caused somegaps in the schedule for the local club. Legionai r es T h e Legionaires finally h a d their winning streak snapped when they drop- ped a 2-I decision to the Cobourg Pir- ates at Donegan Park in Cobourg. This was the first loss for the Whi tby Pee- Wee club after eleven straight victor- ies. Their downfall was an inability to come up with any kind of hitting attack and some defensive lapses which gave Cobourg both of their runs unearned, which is a toughway to lose a baligame. ThePiratespicked up a run in the bot- tom of the first and the game was score- lessuntil they made it 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Whitby's hopes were rais- ed briefly in the top of the final inning whenDougShearer slugged a home run shot to deep centre field for Whitby's on I y run. The on I y other hitters in Whitby's anaemic batting attack vvere John Heffer and Tim Twining who had s in gles. For southpaw Cam Murkar i t w a s a tough I o s s as he came up wi th elevenstrikeouts, gaveup a long hit, a bloopsinglejust behind first base, and didn't walk a single batter in the game which is as close to a perfect pitching performance a hurler can come and yet still lose. Fred Petryshyn excels Earlier in the week the Legionaires d r opped Bowmanville 9-I at Memor.ial Park in a game where Fred Petryshyn was given his first start of the season an d h e came through with fine style, giving up five hits and strik ing out four. T he L eg io naires should have saved s om e o f their bi ts for their Cobourg game because they jumped on Sargin- son, the Bowmanville hurler for 12 bi ts. Doug Shearer had a triple, double and single ta lead the hitters. Greg Tusb- i n gbham a nd John Heffer each had a p a i r o f sing I e s. Blair Gibson had a triple, Dave McWhirter had a double, whileFredPetryshyn, Darren Vine and Rick K a y added singles. The Legion- a i r e s w i I I host Bowmanvilîle at Peel Park next Thursday, July 13, and this week end will be in Niagara Falls for the tournament there which is regarded as one of the tops in Ontario. Unpred ictable AttersU1 eys TheAttersley Tire and Sports Jun- ior club at times remind one of the old Me ts , the y're unpredictable and you never know what is going to happen when they take to the field. When Kingston was in town for a double header a week ago they whipped the local club 12-1 in t h e opener a n d the Attersleys didn't give their fans too much to stay around for, but the contest was one of the best of the season as they lost by a slim 2-0 score and might have been the winners w i th their expertise defensive play if they hadn't run up against Fisher who was throwing a no-hitter for the Kings- ton club. Kendal was a t Fairman for a single game lastweek. They were out in front 7-I andit didn't appear that the Atters- leysweregoing to get going in this one but you shouldn't leave the park early when they're playing because they pro- ceeded to tie it up 7-7 and then put on some ninth inning dramatics to win 8-7. Borc huk enlivens game Gary Borchuck got on base, made it third and got the pitcher to throw in an attempt to pick him off, but the Kendal pitcher hit the protective helmet Bor- chu ck was vearing, the bail bounced o u t of play and the Whitby player was awarded home, the run giving the Att- e r s I e y s a wellI deserved come-from- behindvictory. Eventhough the clinch- er was a l i ttl e taintcd, the Vhi tby club had hung in there rallying to tie it up, and it w a s a great morale booster for t h e c I u b . Mike McArthur used three pi tchers in this one. Dave Ross who has b e en throwing v er y well1 started but developed some soreness in his arm in the fourthîleaving George Yates to take over . George came through with a strong showing and when he tired in the eighth, Greg Cairns came in to wrap it up. With a fine assiston aplay at short, Dave Moore also helped to hold Kendal s cor eless. The Attersîeys next home g am e is on Wedneseay, June 12vhen Port Hope visits Fairman. Ban t ams edge Os h awa T h e Lasco Steel er bantams edged Oshawa in one of the best games play- ed 'in Whitby this year, a real thriller in which the Steelers won in the bottom of the'ninth. They were behind going in- to the eighth but picked up a single, a n d then in t h e finale put two men on b as e wbhe n Mike Rowley drove in the winner. Dave Allen, on the mcund for t he Steelers hooked up in a pitcher's duel with Robbie Maddock. Each struck o ut nine, but the Whi tby r ight-hander was in top form and the two runs Oshawa g ot w er e un earned. Along witb bis s tandout pitching chore, theVWhi tby man p ic ked up an im p or tant single in the ninth. 16 - 6 W i fl Mike Rowley with a double and sin- glie , Gu y Ouliffecwith three singles, John Sturgess and Steve Thwaitcs each w ith two singles and Dave Allen and Steve Tutton wi th singles were the W h i t b y h i tters. Earl ier in the week theSteelers romped to a 16-6 win over Orono in whichMikeCallan got the win. This weekend the Steel ers are in Belle- ville for the Golden Bat Tournament. This Sunday Welcome visits Fairman for a Midget contest wi th the Canadian T i r e Midgets. Plans are final ized for the Qshawa-Whitby Midget tournament on July 15-16, which has attracted some of t h e t o p teams in the province and tournament officiais are reminding ail b a s e b a I I boosters in the area to get th e ir tickets for the gala dance to be held a t Heydenshore Pavilion on Sat- urday, July 15.
