Most of the schedule for Whitby's E.O. 8. A. clubs went down thedrainwithall therainsofilast week. W e d ne s d ay's Pee-Wee contest in PortHopewas the first one to go by the boards, and at home, Friday's Midget game with Oshawa, and Saturday 's Jun- ior game with Kendal were postponed. One-hitter for Ross TheAttersley Juniors earlier in the week came up with an 8-I triumph over the Newcastîe Lions in which newcomer Dave Ross threwa brilliant one-hitter. lnputting together his win, Ross struck out il. At the same time his mates came through with their most potent hitting attack of the season when they hi t for ten safeties. Miles Shrider led the At- ter slIeysswith three.while Dave Ross helpedhis own cause with a pair as did Dave Moore, while Harry Long and Doug Warlow added singles. On Sunday Kingston were the visitors a t E . A. Fairman for a double-header and they took both ends from the Atter- sleys. One inning, the first, changes the opener from a good ballgame into a sleeper. The Lions jumped into a six- r un lead i n the first inning and never lookedback. The Whitby club got three runs over in the fourth but that was the extent of their offense as they left men s t r anded. Bob Stewart with a double, Harry Long, Randy Sorochan, George Yates and Gary Borchick were the Whitby hitters. Close decision in second The second game turned out to be a c l os e 2-0 decision in which Kingston h u r l er Dave Fisher threw a no-hit ter at the Attersleys. Greg Cairns was on t h e mound for the openers and George Y ates who gave up eight hits was the loser on record in the nightcap, ·although i t 's di fficult to be a winner when the other fellow is throwing a no-hit chore. T h i s weekend the Whitby club will be in Thorold for what is regarded as the top Junior Tournament in the prov- ince, the winner-being Ontario's repre- s e n t a t i ve in the Canadian Champion- ships. The Legionaires The Legionaires had a rest from E. O. B. The Legionaires played their best def- ensive baseball of the season with the keystone combination of Rick Kay and -CHANGE-UP TO MICHELIN X steel-belled radial tires Aftersley Tire Service 66..33.. Mark MacDonald came up with a strong game for the Legion- aires giving up three hits and walking only on e. Dave McWhirter came on in relief in the sixth and threw a fine two innings holding the Oshawa team hitless. Whi tby met Bowmanville, considered to be one of the league's top clubs in their secondgame, and they handed them an 8-i loss in a game not as one-sided a s t h e s c o r e would indicate for the first three innings but then the Legion- aires pulled away. The Canadian Tire Midgets lost an- other heart-breaker in extra innings, this one in Peterborough 9-8 which was broken up in the 1lth when Peterborough homered. If you will beleaving on the FIRS-1 day of the w e e k end, and returning on the LAST day, i can't offer any suggestions with regards to the best times. It seems that m os t traveliers I know have different opinions as to when the traffic is iight- est, and on a weekend such as this; be i ng bo t h a Canadian and American h l i da y , t h e traffic will just not be I igh t. If at ail possible, try to avoid t he s e two days by leaving earlier or later; also try to use the side roads as m uc h as possible andilisten to y our radio for useful tips about traffic con- ditions. But if youdo get stuck in heavy traffic, or wind up following a 'sight- seer', be patient, and don't try to fol- low the guy who is taking unneccessary risks by doing the fancy passing - after ai I he is only going to get there a few minutes ahead of you IF he is LUCKY!
